OK...I've been playing Doom3 alot and the whole game is pretty creepy, but it got me thinking about individual game levels that stand out in your memory as being ultra creepy.

I'm sure there are lots of great contenders here, but if you like to be scared here is a game level I would like to recommend to everyone.

Thief - Deadly Shadows...the Orphanage level.

Without giving anything away...This level just oozes forboding atmosphere. It is by far, the scariest level I have ever experienced in a game so far. Not because of a heavy smattering of blood and guts, but due to some truly disturbing subject material and how it's presented to you. Amazing job by the game developers in creating such a feeling in a game level. By the end of it, you'll be glad it's over and you made it out, so you can give your heart a rest.

Anyone here who played this game through can attest to this amazing level. Anyone here that is a real gamer, you owe it to yourself to try out not only this great game, but to experience such a "stroke of genious" level.

The first level in Halo where you meet those little jumpy balloon critters.

I remember the Entertainment deck on System Shock 2 having a particlarily scary atmosphere.

Max Payne - Valkyrie Hallucination Level

Walking down trails of blood, reliving the main characters nightmare past of having his wife and child executed by drug users. Hearing the baby whine in all manner of wierd sound effects plus the gunshots and freaky slow mo effects...

Seeing the child's toys move on their own and the whole freaky thing inwind in green hues of terror, perhaps not as plain scary as other games but down-right head screwy freaky nonetheless ugh

Playing "The Suffering", with lights off, late at night using headphones is a truly, in my opinion, terrifying experience. I have never been as jumpy playing a game before this one came along.

I agree 100% with you there Mr Binary. Thief 3 is one of the few non MMO games that I have played right through recently and that level was very, very creepy.

Without giving too much away I remember going to see who was at the front door as I was approaching that room in the orphanage attic for the 1st time........ Laughing

Aliens versus Predator 2, on Hardcore of course, when you have to go into the sewer system as a marine and the aliens are coming at you in the dark. Shocked Or for that, any moment in the first one where you meet a facehugger or... (you get the idea, I love AvP)

any part of doom 3 is bloody scary ugh

Im only upto the communication tower bit atm, but some of the levels have been great, especially the ones where u are in pitch darkness trying to kill a zombie, u think u have killed him so you turn on your flashlight only to have him standing right up close infront of you.

Project Zero, the whole game.

Think Ring (not the crappy american one, the japanese original), but scarier. The ghosts come through floorboards and walls when you try and run. And it has some ****ing scary set pieces.

AvP 1.

Hands down, most disturbing game I've played.

Course, I did my best to make matters worse.

Headphones. Home alone. Lights out.

I lasted about 2 minutes post first alien (playing as marine), then I suicided on intention, and quit game.

Jesus. That was scary.

And yeah, AvP 2 wasn't nearly as scary.

(sidenote: Anyone recall the soundtrack for the game Blood? That is possibly one of the most disturbing soundtracks I've ever heard. Used it a lot for some Call of Cthulhu ;))

Not really that scary, but I spent some tie in the tree houses on Farcry when I first came across the mutants. Things running at me with claws when I wasn't really expecting them made me jump.

Not really scary, but one of the best level in a game I ever played.

Starcraft, playing as Terran (human) - The level where you have to defend your base for 20 mins from attacking zerg enemies.

Doom3 is definitly scary... from now on as soon as it get's too dark outside (in real life) I stop playing:

Last night almost beat up my mom, because I didn't hear here come in my room (had headphones on, and only one little light in the room was lit)

Most scariest game I played so far, was the adventure Phantasmagoria 1 (can't remember if I spelled this correctly)... which looked to be inspired on the movie "The Shining".

Project Zero all the way, the most frightening game i have ever played.

Doom3 is scary until you realize that where there's an armor shard, there's a monster waiting to jump you.

It got boring after the first few levels really, awesome graphics but the rest aint that interesting.

Forgot about Blood... that was the first FPS I ever played :) That was along time ago now... Almost forgetten it, apart from those freaky monks.

The first AvP was only scary when those facehuggers were coming from you, and you couldn't see them because they liked the dark and you hand to fire the flamethrower like a madman to hit them. Best levels of the first one is the one in the Cooling Tower or onboard the space station. Those two were tense, the rest was just random shooting, but then I've watched the films more times then I can remember.

But yes, if you've never played AvP, go get it NOW & play it at midnight, lights out, home alone, volume up full.
Have fun... Twisted Evil

AvP as a marine I would have to agree with, Cramped dark corridors, flickering light, motion detector beebing, never knowing from which direction they will come... ugh scary game that.
Also, the silent hill games are enough to give you a nervous breakdown, it's insane. You have to experience it for yourself.

Got to agree with some people regarding AvP 1 (and 2) being extremely scary in the Marine campaign. I have developed a phobia of airducts! ugh

Cut scene in Dark Omen before going underground and facing more undead :P

There's a moment in "The Suffering" in which you access a viewscreen, only to see the camera you're looking through is in the room with you. You see yourself standing in the middle of the room....and then some freaky thing comes from off camera toward your vulnerable self! You deactivate the viewer and spin around with your guns ready and your heart a-flutter...but nothing is there.....

I had to go have a smoke after that one. Neutral
