UN/NATO/Whatever don't dare attack pirate ports because they fear it would undermine the Somalian governement, already threatened by an Islamic revolution.
Ship owners are encouraged to protect themselves by hiring security companies, but they won't do it, because it would cost them more than a maybe 10% chance to have to pay X millions as ransom. |

It will stop the moment the governments of the planet start giving military escorts to ships carrying cargo. Problem is shipping companys are privately entitys and their assets belong to them so governments dont see a point in protecting those ships. |

But it shows that big ships are simply useless against this guys, even warships as they use speed boats.
Whats needed is well equipped gunships, or helicopters to deal with this threat.
just bring back old strategies that were used before.
simpler solution: Hire a good squad of mercenaries to escort the 60m$ worth of items, i mean seriously, what does it take 1-2 months to reach us maybe? a company of 10 could be paid on army wages 30k - 60k $, its money well spent to protect your goods. |

Im surprised that for tankers at least they havent put a attack helicopter on each one. Pirates come close, get into the chopper, fly up, and introduce them to their maker. |

The "transitional" government of Somalia has already given the green light to the UN and the "Hot Pursuit" rules go into effect. So now warships can enter territorial waters to chase and board a ship.
Blackwater is of course being smart and forming a naval protection division of the company. Now the US never signed onto the Declaration of Paris outlawing privateers and even Ron Paul tried to authorize a privateer bill in 2001 against Osama bin Laden. Hmmm, chances Blackwater could become the latest US privateer since WWII? Time to start lobbying!$!$!$ |

They should bring back what the US had to do in WW2, use the convoy system. Twice a week have all ships gather at one point and escort them past the area that has a high piracy.

. . . That requires 2 people to fly the helicoptor, and then the crew to maintain it. As well as the helicopter itself of course. That would be much more costly than hiring someone to protect them. |
