Seems I have found a temporary solution to my socket losing problem: Socket holders. I forged them from a umts pcie card. Not so comfortable, but...

indeed I do no longer experience any connection losses now, playing with eplus, a german mobile phone and umts service provider. It blocks tracing, so I can't tell what route my packets take now, but it works for my mac client as well as my windows clients.
So it's traffic shaping after all? Not necessarily with our national isps but at some transfer point or however these connections between different carriers are called. Maybe I'll find some proxy out there with appropriate routing - umts is only umts after all.

Hi

I've been having some issues with either freezes or simply losing connection.

This solution may have already been posted (didn't read all thread).

This normally happens when I'm running two accts in full screen and alt/tabbing between them and Firefox. What usually happens is that the monitor will go blank for a second or two and then pop back on as I alt/tab. But I will get dropped frequently enough that I'm ready to pack it in and play another game for a while. Especially considering that about three out of 5 times that I get dumped, one or both characters get reset to default :(

So I did some sleuthing and found this little gem in my startup folder. BTDNA.

Google it if you wish but there is not much good said about it. It ended up on my comp courtesy of CCP when downloading Apocrypha.

What I believe had been happening is that as I alt/tabbed, DNA was initialized and proceeded to do it's thing causing a spike in the bandwidth usage causing EVE to drop out or time out.

Since uninstalling DNA and cleaning the registry I have been, so far, problem free.

Might be worth having a look into your start programs and see if you have it in there.

In XP look in Start/Run. Type msconfig and click OK. Look in the start tab. Untick the box beside btdna.

Or just go to Add/remove and see if it's there. It will be labeled simply DNA.

Hope this helps some of you that are as frustrated as I was.

BL

Ok, what i referred to is something like this.

The whole issue here reminds me of something a lot of AoC players went through maybe one year ago. At that time connection losses where quite common. In the end they were traced back to some transfer points between two high level isps, but I don't remember the details. Anyway I got around that problem by tunneling to an anonymizing proxy that happened to use an other route to the AoC servers. Pure luck, I'd say Razz. Same thing now: eplus uses a different routing from t-com which is my isp for everything else but eve now.

Fly save!

I've started getting this problem in the last 3 weeks and it's been gradually getting worse.

It only seems to happen around peak times though. For me it seems to be happening around 1900-2300 GMT

It's really rubbish, the game is unplayable at these times.

The above post is the same experience as I'm getting. I also use Nildram as an isp Confused It's not software related at the client side, as I have a pc and mac, both with the same crappy problem. If the problem isn't CCP, could it be traffic shaping from the isp? Mad

I'm using Vista on a high-spec machine. I'm on a wired DSL connection (8mb). I'm not using my connection for anything else. I'm with Nildram/Pipex (UK).

Sort this out for the love of the baby jesus.

Sounds exactly the same as my problem with the socket closed crap. I also use Nildram Confused
Its not a client side software issue either, as I have the same problem with the mac and pc. If its not CCP, then its traffic shaping, which Nildram deny Mad

Yeah, but 1. they can tell only for their own network infrastructure - there's no such thing as door-to-door service in "the internet", literally speaking. And 2. they might even tell the truth as far as Nilram itself is concerned. But what about the gateway to highlevel isps? We don't know and won't be able to get hands on good data - that's something CCP could (should, will, is propably right now trying to) do.

The guys at CCP are the professionals - let's hope they do dedicate some of their efforts to our little problem, even if we are a small (but loud) minority Confused

I've been having these problems on and off for about 3 months now.

Something I tried recently was to turn off the igb server option in evehq program. I believe ther is a similar option in evemon and maybe eft.

Since then which was 3 days ago I've had no socket closed problems. I've no idea if this is just luck or what it might be doing but it seems to be working and might be worth giving it a try.

Edit: It's now been a week and I haven't had one single socket closed incident.
I also did "ticked resource Cache enabled" which was suggested below me.

I had this problem for about 2 weeks.
After I analyzed the log server I found the program turned in some sort of loop before it lets the socket fall.

So I went to the setup screen and ticked resource Cache enabled, and now I am stable since 6 hours, what is a record..

By the by, this distinctly reminds me of a problem Nildram users had with WoW for over a year and a half. The problem was that a router which peered between Telia and Nildram was faulty, leading to what would appear to be lag. What was actually happening, however, was that packets going to the WoW servers were still getting through fine, but packets coming back to the user were getting held up and then released all at once.

Once this problem started, it would get worse and worse until so many packets arrived at once that the WoW client was overwhelmed and disconnected. So yeah, I think this is an exact replica of that problem. Why? Well:

- I logged on a jita alt this morning and had it happen 4 times in the space of 10 minutes. When it's happened on my main (in very empty 0.0 systems) it's been much rarer.

- When it last happened (game stopped responding to commands) I had my drones out. Not wanting to lose them and not having anything to lose, I spammed recall for a bit and then waited before ctrl+q'ing. When I logged back in I had all my drones in my drone bay.

- "Socket closed" is pretty clearly the clients way of coping with a flood of data packets that it can't deal with at once.

After over 3 years in EVE I have had to cancel both my accounts because of this unresolved issue. There is just no way you can play like this, you don't even know the connection is lost till it's too late. Sad day in EVE when your biggest enemy is your connection.Neutral

Yep tunneling solved my problem too.

It's not a solution I want to use long term though.

CCP, can you PLEASE look into the routers between Nildram/Pipex and your server cluster. There must be some contacts you can use yo get this resolved. A guy a couple of posts up highlighted the probable cause of this issue with the packets being sent all at once.

Another option is using Your Freedom. A good description of how o set itup can be found here:

But yeah, these are temporary workarounds. If I understood CCP noCs networking DevBlog, CCP can influence the route our connections take (?).

You've pretty much summarised exactly my experience with this issue. I can send commands, recall drones, start a warp to a celestial body, and even chat, but I don't get any server response back and eventually, the socket closed.

It is not limited to Nildram or Tiscali users, it is pretty much a global issue. I am in Canberra, Australia, and know of quite a few others throughout Australia and a few outside Australia on various different ISPs who are suffering the same issue.

I am betting the issue is on a primary router somewhere pretty close to, but upstream from CCPs London provider. In otherwords, it is outside of CCP's direct control and all they can do is apply pressure up the line to try to rectify the issue.

*knockknock* Hello CCP, anybody in there? As this problem exists for half a year now... any kind of statement will be welcome; something like "we're all off, walking in stations" or "no priority, relevant for 0,1% of accounts only" would help (in deciding to drop my acconts for good).

In responce to socket closing.I have been playing for just over a year now and just got this problem 4 days ago,24,07.09 to 29.07.09,It started every hour or so and just got worse from there,we went through everything right down to even the modem and cables and found nothing, system was fine, cables all good and modem working fine, what we did find was the isp was having problem and once they fixed there problem everything is now working fine, check with your isp to see if they are having problems or even with the exchange as it is not your computer or the game, hope this helps as it drove me nuts trying to find the problem.

I just reinstalled my operating system and now I get this problem, every couple of hours or so it quits and I get a socket closed error.

Isp is bt.

Don't know if the fact that I reinstalled windows and the problem 'started' is of interest.
What is interesting to me is that I reinstalled windows to fix ventrilo, which kept running to 50% cpu and crashing. Now my eve is fubarred!

Also when I get the socket closed error my ventrilo also cuts out.

I'll have a snoop around.

Sort it out CCP, what are we paying monthly for if not the ability to access the servers when we want to play? From a company i've had nothing but a good experience with so far, MASSIVE disappointment in both development and customer service.
