I was thinking tonight in a really crazy way, what a place Eve would be if it was impossible to set standings, and thus impossible to remove alliances from your overview.

This sounds almost impossible in todays Eve, but in actual fact it would be the most sensible thing to do, for eve and for the servers. It would force alliances to split and co-ordinate rather than bundle into one system, it would split up these HUGE super power blocks and perhaps make eve much more unstable - thus giving room to new alliances to step in.

It would mean rather than these unofficial super alliances you would have factions loyal only to their own flag, and if people want to build these large empires it would require a large and VERY organised leadership rather than a coalition of smaller alliances who are in actual fact unorganised as single entities.

I imagine this suggestion will get ripped apart by some people, but before replying i ask you give serious consideration to the idea and think about it. These huge powerblocks are making eve very limited in so many ways, and the only way to discourage said blocks and blobs which are node crashingly huge is to not allow standings and force players to unite under one flag or co-ordinate in a far more organised way.

Alliances these days are the corporations of yesterday, super alliances (many alliances) are now the alliance of yesterday, it leaves the eve population with little choice, join them, form their own said superblob or stick to empire. These are not healthy options!

@ one time standings was not as easy to see as it is today.
Alliances worked around it none the less.

I am sorry to say even if you removed the in game mechanic people would still find a way.

If said changes were implemented and the NC co-ordinated properly it would work for them, not against them.

This has nothing to do with alliance affiliation, this is about making eve more than a 2 power block universe. Everyone outside those power blocks are just meh entities that even if they are strong, cant do anything without either joining block or making a block.

Stop being so single minded, all people do on forums these days is troll.

Although another person has already said this, the functionality you see today was added to accommodate behaviour that was already the norm long before these things were added, just like warp-to-zero came to replace 0km warp-to bookmark sets.

Corporations banded into alliances before those were in any formal way recognised by the game, visual standings appeared as a means of keeping people from just manually-checking and bookmarking local for people's info, causing a flood of fetch calls to the server..

removing existing functionality cannot serve to curb behaviour, because we know it doesn't - these things happened before the game moved to recognise them.

I fail to see why this would spice EvE up, except for the occasional funny killmail.

This

Coalitions and powerblocs would still form, they'd probably work a bit better to cut the fat. I'd imagine that (somewhat ironically) that removing standings would further drive out smaller alliances/corps in favor of a few large alliance coalitions.

If you want to encourage small corps and alliances in 0.0, add in additional coalition-level standings tools and functions so alliances in general can work better together without headache
