I canít believe how many people are whining, you pay a monthly fee for a reason this is it! For running and maintaining servers!

Thank you CCP for your good work in resolving this problem. Would be nice if we were told what the issue was as well...

I LOL at people who don't understand network technology and how little stress even 1,000 people pinging a server puts on it.

We're talking about a packet of 32 bytes of data here, folks. If you had any idea how much data gets passed back and forth when just one person logs in, your head would explode. Rolling Eyes

ok, now, all we want is an explanation of what happened, what was the solution, and what has been done to ensure this not happening again? :)
Also, which processes was it that failed, and who is the process owner?

Hehe, thanks for giving me my life back! (I't s actually pathetic, isn't it? :()

I have a cousin who owns and runs a Manitoulin, Ontario, Canada based web hosting and wireless internet company, and he tells me these expenses for a WEB server:

Servers: $10,000 a unit (there are hundreds, and are replaced with upgrading every two years)
Hard Drives: $600 per 36 or 63GB drive (they use SCSI drives as they are fast for multiple-user-access, much better than even the improved Serial drives most of us use today)
Power: $2,500 a MONTH

This doesn't include manhours or anything like that. Seriously, it takes serious bucks to run a server as relatively smoothly as Eve. Be thankful that it's not more expensive!

In manitoulin im sure the bandwidth is a real b*tch .. unless its offsite/managed hosting somewhere...

LOL - I loved it when this forum website became unavailable too. classic Laughing

P.S. Professionals I am one too. I know that "stuff happens".

But generally a high profile company that makes all its money off Internet -- has an exact hardware mirror site for diagnostics and dry runs of new configurations as well as backup purposes. Plus test server setups at some lower level of fidelity for most "take it apart" testing. Idea

Ideally CCP would just hot swap or quick boot the "fixed" mirror site in place of the normal live site after verifying with a test load of data. After a short final verification wait they would then apply the same fixes to the regular live site and switch back at next normal down time.

So really CCP doesn't have much excuse for not figuring out the sure answers first. Fortunately they are pretty good at their job despite the lack of complete offline testing. And lucky.Razz
