Hello, I started this game about a month ago, thought I wanted to be an Industrialist, but found I'm not too fond of how it works, and that at least at this moment, there's much less money to be made from it than from combat missions. Having said that, I would love to try out the pvp in this game, and was curious if there's a particular race or weapon that's meant to excel at pvp. If so, why is this race/equipment setup a good choice for pvp?

Most solo/small gang pvp is done shortrange, which favours both Gallente and Minnie due to their tactics, pros/cons and slot layout. Amarr has the problem that most of it's T1 ships suck, besides that they're not so good upclose. Caldari (in general) isn't that useful for solo/small gang pvp unless you get very specific ships and/or think outside the box setupwise.

Overall Gallente is king but I find Minnie more fun. Both are solid choices.

Well, I haven't been playing long either but so far I'm thinking Minmatar; projectile weapons don't use Cap, so it's free to run EWAR stuff like Scramblers and Webbers; Minmatar ships are the fastest in general, and speed is very useful in PvP; most ships are flexible in how you want to tank them, and most ships can easily be armor tanked to use those valuable mediums for EWAR; Minmatar are also just TEH awesomest, with the coolest looking ships and those awesome gigantic flight glasses out of the 60s.

I'd say Gallente. They are easier to train for in terms of combat. You don't need to train much of shield tanking or missile skills like you do with Minmatar. Also Gallente combat ships are good for running missions and farming 0.0 rats. As a combat pilot you might be interested in such sources of income. Minmatar ships generally considered to fare the worst for PVE.

I'd agree with Gallente or Minmatar at the beginning. Depends on whether you want to use drones or not. Drones are the Gallente's area of expertise....while Minmatar like speed and projectiles (Minmatar are probably the second biggest drone users).

Caldari are not great for solo PvP, but have some of the best support ships around. Amarr can be tricky to start, but once you get the support skills can be fantastic.

There is NOTHING to stop you cross training to another race's ships. I have a Gallente who's skilling up Amarr ships right now and a Caldari who can fly a number of the Gallente ships.

I'd say Amarr. Do not listen to that Sebiestor over there.
One reason is that when you're new, your capacitor is your margin for screwing up. Amarr have never-ending capacitors of joy. You could run a whole fleet off a Harbinger's power output.

Also Amarr ships are made of solid gold. We glitter in the sun of a thousand systems. And we shoot lasers. What more do you need to know?

Amarr have good ships in all classes.
The punisher is a good frigate, the arbitrator may be my favorite cruiser, the harbinger hits hard, the prophecy tanks well, their interceptors are ok (yet nothing exceptional there), the HAS are cool and offer two interesting PvP perspectives.
The command ships are great, the absolution tanks well and hits hard, the damnation may be one of the toughter sub-capital ship to crack.
I can't tell about Bs, I don't fly any in any race. But the recent update in amarr BS causes them to be viable fleet options as much as in smaller gangs.

I fly amarr and gallente, people already said gallente works in PvP, so I just talked about amarr.

i am not an expert but from what i see with minmatar is that it takes time to train them up in a good lvl in order to pvp.
for the other races i have no idea at all

Not true. Yes Minnie ships can shield and armor tank, yes you can train both projectiles as missiles and drones but stating that you have to do it all is just untrue.

All you need to do is to focus on a specific shiptype. I have been focusing on armor tanking turretships. My shield skills suck, my missile skills are non existant but I fly Rifters, Thrashers, Ruptures, Hurricanes and Inties. Later on I could stay true to what I chose and go Tempest OR if I want to start working on missile/shield skills.

So no; you don't need it all, you just need to make a plan for what you want to do and achieve.

Minmatar are nice, but if you want to get into a face melting pvp ship in a short amount of time, Gallente is the way to go.

You know... funny thing, I fly minnie and love it... but someone convinced me I should get a raven for missions. Now I actually have to work on my tank... my tempest tanked mission rats 3-4x better than a raven. What gives? (Yes, active shield tanks for both)

Assuming you have the right hardners, the Raven shouldn't have any problems at all with any level 4 mission (baring perhaps Enemies Abound 5/5) with just a tech 2 fit.

Drones are a real menace to caldari ships. However nobody hits ships harder than the Civire.

Alright, sounds like it's down between Min and Gallante. I had a friend in game who said that smartbombs are ungodly awesome, but that they don't tell the difference between friend and foe, so you can wipe out your own drones with them? How useful are they really in a pvp setting, and would that hinder being Gallente, if say I were interested in making a close quarters fighting character, perhaps using things like Blasters and Smartbombs?

smartbombs are actually a bit stupidbombs. if you pvp near a station and you hit concord by accident what will happen? yes. you will go down from concord.

Smart bombs are not good as a main weapon system unless in specific circumstances;

- you HAVE to be in 0.0 really, otherwise it's just too dangerous
- if you know you'll be swarmed by inties while there's no (heavy) dictor.

Nothing is more fun than jumping through a gate, see 5 inties rush towards you and then go pop, after which you warp off due to a sick amount of WCS in low. But that's very situational and only works once, if at all.

I would say minmatar.

They are kinda skillpoint intensive tough and their batleships suck.

For pvp you go: Cruiser(stabber) > Battlecruiser (Hurricane) > Assault ship > Heavy assault cruiser (Vagabond)

The Vagabond is one of the most feared ships in eve YARRRR!!

It depends on what you want to do in PVP. Caldari Crow is an awesome tackler, and the falcon excells at jamming. Minnie's Sabre and vaga and Rapier are nice. Gal has the rediculous drone boats. Amarr well the curse is kinda nice I guess.

It all comes down to play style.. If you like to go fast go minnie. If your ok watching drones chew someone apart Gallente. Caldari is fun if you like knowing the guy on the recieving end is saying damn it I can't shoot back.. Amarr is a mixed bag ...

Ah I dont know... Caldari has served me well... torpedos melt things, and EWAR is just so useful, I think I'd die without my scorpion/blackbird/kitsune/griffin (yes, even the griffin...).

And, they are, with little doubt, the kings of PVE, which helps fund those PvP excursions.

/me takes a deep breath.

My personal preference presently is for Vexors/Myrmidons. Get in their faces and let rip with blasters and combat drones. About 20m after insurance if its T2 fitted, a lot cheaper T1. Stuff just kinda melts.

Next on the skill list: Amarr. Pretty death beams and heavy buffer tank. What's not to like? That, and once I break down and invest some SP into missiles, the Sac is a very, very nice ship.
