What does flashing red on the Overview mean? I was ratting in .4 with my destroyer and some guy in a wolf jumped into the same belt as me in a wolf and was flashing red... i decided to leave?
i warped out and got back to highsec and docked as fast as I could.
now i feel kinda stupid like i overreacted.
did i do the right thing? |

The right thing depends on your values of what's right or wrong.
Open your Overview Settings and have a look at what each appearance means.

yeah :) Although you can dock in lowsec system as well and wait until he leaves local. Flashing red means he had negative security status, which you get when shooting and killing other players in lowsec areas. Im 200% sure he warped to your belt for the same reason :) |

i checked his bio and apparently he has a webpage where he posts his pirating activities, and his security status is -10.00
Im surprised he didnt tackle me, but then i DID gtfo as soon as i saw him...

By default a flashingback background means that the person did something that allows you to attack him without global agression, loss of security rating and/or CONCORD blowing you up. This can be caused by can theft, a warring corp or (as was the case here) a security rating of -8.0 or lower ranking him as an outlaw. The only way to get a security rating that low is to be either extremely stupid or to have a high focus on attacking other players trough suicide ganking or low sec piracy, so it's very likely you barely dodged a pirate wanting to give you a friendly hug. I sometimes nickname low sec flashy reds fuzzies because they just want a hug and give you warm fuzzy feelings |

...providing you're not using Autopilot, which means certain death in losec. |

All death is certain Having a fast warping ship is the best thing to be safe from pirates in lowsec. |

As already stated if he was flashing red, he was criminally flagged for attacking someone within the previous 15 minutes and he was certainly planning you for desert.
Docking in a station in lo-sec is fine but if the pirate is in a ship that can tank the sentries for a period of time he will just wait outside until you undock or log off. Be aware he may also have friends that are already within the station that will alert him when you are undocking and they will be right behind you to bump you away from the station. Best bet if it's a system that you like to use regularly is to make several safespots and warp from one to another, being sure to move on to the next safespot within 30 seconds or so to avoid being scanned out. Or leave the system as you did.
On a sidenote someone can flash red if they have stolen loot from you, but as this guy had -10 sec so I doubt that was the case this time.
Hope this helps.

Flashing red just means that your intentions are often misunderstood. |
