Long story short: I'm building a new gaming comp, and it's gonna have a Core 2 Quad in it, but I'm kinda stuck on which version of Windows XP to go for (I've decided Vista ain't worth the bother yet). I know I want Pro, but which one? The 64-bit version or the 32-bit one? ugh

I feel I made too much of a mess of this character. I figured it'd be best to just start from scratch.

Xp 64's driver support is pretty horrid... unless you really need to address 4gb and up, 32 bit is the way to go for XP.

I'm sure it's much better now, but my housemate got XP 64 bit and had no end of trouble with incompatibilities. Hardware and software (printers and virtual disc drive software are the examples that come to mind).

The thing to consider is this: what will you gain from having 64bit? Is it worth the risk of having to buy new peripherals or go without certain programs until they get around to making a version compatible with 64bit?

Use 32bit. Dual boot to Linux.

If you are using less than 4GB of RAM: 32bit XP.

If you are using 4GB or more of RAM: 64bit Vista (I think anyway. The 64bit XP may have got better driver support now, but last I heard of it people who got it were slitting their wrists.)

Just built a dual quad Xeon comp with 8GB Ram and a Quadro FX 4600 GPU at work.

No driver problems at all with XP64.

I plan to switch to XP64 at home as well, as I now have 4GB RAM...

I say get Vista 32bit ultimate.
Best Windows ever and EVE runs without any FPS loss on it.

32 bit.

Anyone who's gone for 64 bit XP for a gaming system is a muppet who thought "Ooh, 64 bits! Twice as fast!".

Run 64bit XP if you are going to or think you may eventually have or exceed 4GB of ram. 32bit OS can not address the full 4GB; they cap out at around 3.5GB or so. Applications written for native 64bit execution may also see some speed advantages (GL finding any native 64bit programs though).

Otherwise, just run XP Pro 32bit.

I've just lost access to EVE right now thanks to crappy slightly broken and badly repaired overheating Alienware laptop syndrome. MadCrying or Very sad
