I think the biggest barrier to female players is the fact that it is a science fiction game. The reality is that eve is probably more suited to female players than most other games the slow burning and adaptable aspect of the game play make it perfect. The problem is hooking them first I could suggest advertising specifically aimed at women but that has probably already been done.
On the subject of ambulation I don't want it, it makes me very afraid I fear change.

HEAVENS! I would NEVER think to claim such a thing. We all know intarweb spaceships are serious business.

On that note, hell yes I am having fun posting in the tri-annual OMG Gurlz thread :)

Ambulation will help bring more females to Eve, and not because they can wear clothes and decorate stuff, but because it can add depth to the context of relationships between players. We males are a pretty shallow lot compared to females when it comes to relationships. Social interaction and the vagaries of social politicking are lost on most of us gorillas, but contain depths of play potential for females that no game mechanics can ever simulate. Game mechanics however can help create the environments for more social interaction, and Ambulation will do that very well I think.

This is going to sound completely nuts to most people, it sounds pretty goofy to me too, but I think females would like this basic idea. I will for lack of a better term call it a "friend tree". Allow players to say who their friends are, a public list and a private list, and a player can allow anyone in the private list to see the rest of the private list, anyone can see the public friends list.

If you click on a player's "friend" it will take you to that next player's public friend list, etc. etc, round and round. As a guy I don't really give a carp about something like this as it holds little value to me. But females love that kind of stuff in my experience. It adds a social element to the game, who's in who's in crowd, who knows who, why does sally the evil -10 pirate know Jenny the happy fluffy carebear? These things interest females to no end and are mostly ignored by males and/or not taken very seriously by males.

It adds a very deep social element that is completely under player controls that has zero impact on our little ships.

No flame intended towards the OP of this thread,if of course your intentions for the thread are simple curiosity and good natured.

A question or two if I may...

What difference does it really make what gender a player is?

A friend is a friend....right?

I don't want to jump to conclusions about anyone's intentions, however it seems in my opinion that the purpose of this thread is a veiled attempt to "expose" women for a purpose I cannot fathom.

Heh. I am not the OP, but I think the intention was honorable, how to attract females to Eve and not some veiled attempt to talk about the Freudian fun one can have with females flying Thoraxes.

Soooo... I read this entire thread and at one point thought I would reply in one way, then by the time I got a few more posts down, I thought about adding some other response and by the time I finished, decided no response really might be the best response.

My response of no response has now been posted.

p.s. could someone humor me and go post a picture of their pet in my thread on Out of Pod Experiences? Very Happy

You want more female players in EVE?

The answer is simple.

Step 1: Ambulation.
Step 2: Introduce decorating.

It MAY sound sexist or whatever thing you want to call it, but the MAJOR element in SW:G and female playerbase was that you could get a house, decorate it and by gods, was it fun.

HEck, they even had a Decorating competition monthly if i remember correctly.

And it's not "bad for EVE", if anything else, it would make the space pewpew more manly, dangerous, out there and "living it up".

Except when your ship get blown up because you know the wrong people who know the wrong people....etc Twisted Evil

Seriously, if you want a 'deep social element' look at the politics, look at the market, though, run awaaay from missions.

As for attracting women: As with all things, if you try and make everyone happy you end up with flavourless mash. Eve is good as it is, and it offers something for most people. Good enough i think.
