I was just toying with the idea of throwing light assault launchers on a drake and hunting for groups of frigates. Seems like it would put out some good dps vs frigates and still have the great passive tank. I was thinking it would just need a webber or two so they didn't keep outrunning the missiles. Anyone ever tried this? or is there a better ship to counter frigates?

You'll never get in position to actually web the frig is the problem.

Your best anti-frig platform is the Caracal or Cerberus.

with the right rigs (flare and thrusters) you should be able to get frigs flying at up to 7km/s or something like this. that would ofc pretty much lower your tank and you still won't hit the ultrapimped inties.

you likely aren't going to get much better than a 7 HML /w t2 precision missiles with a small tank and maybe some sensor boosters and as many BCU as you can fit so you can lock, fire, and allow for flight time before they warp off. Chances are, most frigs are not going to go down in one volley, but if they mess up, you might get em

AM Drake with 2 sensor boosters, 3 BCU, 3 lg extenders and any other passive tanking mods you care to fit, is a very useful ship on gate camps

but it has to be part of a gang

Hmmm... I don't really think this is a good idea, and I'll tell you why:

- What frig/inty pilot in their right mind would take on a drake? They don't have anywhere near the DPS to put even a small dent in your tank - as soon as they see you pop up - they would bail, being faster and more agile - and your sensors wouldn't lock onto them in time. (In my younger days I did try this out in a merlin by stealing from a drake pilot - I learned my lesson in ohhhh 15 seconds flat Embarassed)

- Drake lacks the Caracal/Cerberus/Hawk velocity bonus for lobbing out missiles far - remember light missiles don't fly out as far as the heavy missiles do. So your effective anti-frig range is compromised. At equal max levels a Caracal/Drake/Hawk will fire light missiles 25% further and faster.

- Drake SEVERELY lacks speed and agility - so you won't be able to make up for the lost range by getting into position.

- I mean if you REALLY REALLY must use this ship to kill small ships - you do have a 25 m^3 drone bay - load up some T2 light drones and have at it.

- Yeah you could use rigs - but you'll be wasting millions on rigs to kill ships that aren't worth that much at all (and a pimped out inty will still out run your missiles).

I'm all for thinking outside the box and surprising people - but I just feel like you're really trying to make the drake do something it's poorly designed to do ie. -> hunt small ships on its own.

Hope that's a constructive argument for ya.

The assault launcher Drake does make an excellent anti-frig platform but only when the enemy comes to you. So far the only situation like this I've encountered has been while using one to blow tacklers off of our fleets

IMO, Caracal does the job better because your missiles go faster... with missile radius/exp velocity rigs you can make for a come to Jesus moment on frigs/inties.
