So far it seems that the mining improvements we're getting don't really do so much to change the basic snorefest that mining has always been. So I've come up with a few suggestions between ice mining cycles for you. These are intended to make the mining profession more interactive, and less of an afk activity.
Asteroids should not disappear from space. (Except possibly for the high-end ores) Its a bit ridiculous that our rocks grow from nothing in just a few days. Why not have them always in space, but have different levels of ore available from them on a random basis. Its also extremely ridiculous that a rock 16km in diameter can be fully contained in 25000 cubic meters of cargo space. High end ore rocks should disappear when mined and be replaced by the current random spawn mechanism.
* Ore scanner should be mandatory fitting for miners. As the asteroids grind against each other, you would need a scanner to tell which ones are mined out and which have fresh ore available. The scanner window should feed info into the overview to show which asteroids have ore available and what type. The HUD should then place an icon on rocks that have exposed veins of ore. Without the ore scanner, none of this info should be available.
*Targeting reticle should show remaining ore. Much like the armor/shield display when fighting, you should be able to tell how much ore is available in a particular rock when you target it, provided that you have an ore scanner fitted. This should both be the proportional bar and a numeric count.

I love the remaining ore idea, I really do, although it does make the ore scanners redundant.
And I think the fact that an asteroid disappears is more ridiculous than one that doesn't no matter how much you drill it. Just imagine these new asteroids appearing after the old ones disappear as new asteroids that have floated into the belt (I think they should spawn whole, not grow).

What I'm talking about is changing the ore scanner's function. Use it to find ore rather than find out how much ore there is. *edit* I fail at forum code. |

Then give us more slots Seriously, you do remember that all the T1 mining barges have ONE mid-slot? With needing to use both lows for expanders since all the barges can fill their hold in less than one cycle you have left us nowhere to put even a token tank. Even .7 rats can take a retriever down if the pilot doesn't have good drone skills (ie-new miner). Not everyone flies a hulk and has a slot to use for a scanner..... Quote:

This I would love It would also make the scanner useful, hence more likely to be fitted even if not "required". |

Make all scanners
ship scanners , ore scanners ect ect
High slots !! then people would use them,
i don't know if ur barge has a spare high slot but meh ! |

Nope, no spare slots in highs either. To mount something in the highs you just lost a strip miner (cutting return by a minimum of 33% since the largest barges only have 3).... |
