I have been sitting less than 3 au from a mission running carrier for more than 1 hour now trying to scan him down.

WTF is wrong with the probes. Is it just impossible to scan something down thats running missions or?

Pretty much, mission runners whined till it got nerfed. You have like a 3% chance to scan down someone in mission deadspace.

However, if you can get within 4 AU, use a regular scan probe launcher and use the quest scan probes(use the one specific to the race of the ship you're trying to probe down). Those have like 250 scan str, giving you a much better chance to scan them down.

you need to be in a covert ops with triangulation, pinpointing and signal acquistion at lvl 4 atleast to find anyone consistently and reliably now a days.

but it is not impossible though, just have to click click click click click with short cycles =P

you can try turning on drones/fighters in your overview. Drones are easier to find than ships (go figure) though I'm not sure if the same logic works on fighters.

All probing is fubared atm. Exploration is a joke since patch day, and regular probing gets to be not worth the expense. Its no longer a question of skill but a question of luck. Are you feeling lucky punk? Was it 5 probes or 6 that I dropped? You know, in all the excitement I lost count myself... so are you feeling lucky.... are you?....punk?

The amazing 3% chance of a hit you get on an entity in deadspace makes it so rewarding.

CCP should bring back the probing system pre-nerf. No the old triangulation-based one, but the one which would get a hit if you were in range. A smart missioner wouldn't die in lowsec, even with insta-hit probes.

The clue is dropping multiple probes that create a lot of overlap, not just dumping one somewhere and scanning away...
But doh, that might take some effort! Onoes!

Plus what is so bad about maybe 20 minutes of work, not risk and half a mission raven as loot?

3au ? Drop a quest probe and bingo. Should be no problem.

Dunno if CCP intend it to work but it does.

find a mission system then drop a spook probe at star in middle of system. alwyas get a hit within the probes time limit.
