I know everyone hates destroyers but i had great success with this setup today, being able to take on everything i found in the belts down to 0.2 with ease, or just barely when i found multiple 175k BCs... its a great cheap setup to actually make use of a destroyer for something other than salvaging and its a lot of fun to fly...

Highs
===========
6x small Ion Blasters (ammo of choice i prefer Iridium or Antimatter)
2x small NOS

Mids
===========
1mn MWD / Small Cap Recharger
or
Named AB / Tracking Computer

Lows
===========
Small Armor Rep
PDS
WCS

Switch the MWD and recharger out for the named AB if you are having trouble keeping cap up running the MWD and armor repper at the same time. You will take more damage closing on the targets but once you are under their guns you should be fine orbiting around 1500m. At that range those 6 blasters will shred pretty much anything and your NOS will keep them running no problems. Any other destroyer ratting pilots feel free to give advice!

I started the game 2 days ago and I recently purchased a Catalyst as my first non-frigate ship. I'm very excited about it and this setup sounds good but I'm still new to the acronyms.

Could you please clarify:
NOS
Named AB
PDS
WCS

Thanks in advance!

Nos - energy vampire
AB = afterburner
named = "monoproppelant hydrazune booster rockets" or some such, rather than "afterburner"
PDS = Power Diagnostic Unit. For some reason, people call it system.
WCS = warp core stabilisers. Prevent you getting scramled by 1 point ber WCS.

Destroyers make fine Level 1 and great low sec ratting ships, they just are not good for Level 2 and higher missions.

I've two thoughts on this...

Point 1 - I'm not exactly sure you want Nos on a ratting ship. NPCs have extremely little cap - I have seen a NPC frigate being empty after a single cycle of a single small Nos. Even if a BC might yield three or four cycles, it certainly won't save your life if you need extra cap.

Point 2 - Why use a tracking computer on a ship with small blasters, which already gets an oversized tracking bonus, and /two/ range bonuses?

The catalyst is blessed with 8 turret slots - use them, and watch carnage unfold! I recommend combining an afterburner with a cap recharger. That should solve cap problems more efficiently than two small Nos, and when you get good skills, the afterburner becomes almost cap-free to perma-run.

For even more carnage, drop the warp core stab for a (named) magnetic field stabilizer. You'll be surprised how much that adds. I was, too, on my first destroyer.

If it is a low sp player in low sec the guy (or girlNeutral) might have trouble keeping it all running, so I would say it is on the right lines.

OP;

My favorite seup is this;

8 ion blasters t2 (light ofc) (can be swapped for t1 if skills do not allow)

Microwarpdrive, web.

Small armour repairer, tech 2 if possible, Energised adaptive nano membrane t2 if possible, and 1 nanofibre for speed.

Use antimatter charges and close orbit range to approx 2km if you can, let rip with guns and watch the rat die in a few seconds.

If you see a player you do not know I would immedietly warp out. Or you could shock him and go after him...Twisted Evil

Just be prepared to die a few times. Wink

EDIT; YOu may need to tune this a bit for your skills but it is the most fun setup I have found to date.

Besides if you do this a lot and die a lot, gimme a shout I will help you with getting a few more cats...
