...is what i currently look at, and the wounds sting a bit too. The reason for this? My external seagate 500gb drive dropped about a meter from my desktop tower. Killed the ****ing disk pretty much instantly. Just great, i mean i just got my 10/10mbit internet connection yesterday wand was going to host a LAN party for my mates.
Got so ****ed of i went into a rage tearing off the pillows frommy couch and started pounding the sofa.. **** is all bloody now. And so aremy knuckles.
I am not an expert on hard disk drives, but i do know they are shock sensitive, especially when in use. And falling a meter hitting my other desktop computer case killed it, the drive won't show up when i plug it in... Is it even worth bothering trying to at least reformat the drive and still be able to use it?

Well if it does not spin up it is dead. Can you see it in disk management (assuming Windows OS)? |

Does spin up but the file system doesnet get mounted.. gonna try to connect it directly to the mainboard now, sata.
But my question really is, can the magentic media become permanently damaged? I'm afraid the reding arms has scratched the surface.

I can answer that as a yes as someone who had to send a laptop drive off for £3500 data recovery operation a few weeks ago. |

The heads scratching the surface is most likely what happened yes. Get a new one, and if you don't have backups and intend to try to rescue the data (which is really expensive) then I'd suggest that you don't plug it in again as that is likely to make the damage worse. |

If it had dropped while powered down I'd give it some chance of survival. While running, the heads will crash into the platters and to the drive that's like a meteor storm.
Same happened to me at work. I put the drive on a pedestal under a desk so no-one would see it and be tempted to nick it, and someone pulled the pedestal out to get to a power socket and it fell off.
Click of death, and never saw any data of that drive again. As another poster said, OnTrack or the like could recover it, but that's £3000 or so. |

Yeah i don't act that bad whilst carrying out my actions though. Screaming and stuf doesnt really vent off any anger for me. I just pucnh the wall or the behind the pillows on the sofa.. One time when playing BF two and was in a very bad mood my sister comes in and inserts her mp3player for a charge and the game tabs out, the black hawk heli i waspoloting with 6 people in it crsashed, all died and i got perm banned. I calmly walked to the tool box, got a hammer and smashedmy 21" CRT aswell as my 17"... After that i swore i would only punch walls and other non destructible objects with my fists... |

Be it for me to say but walls aren't very non-destructible. Personally I bought a punching bag years ago when I was into boxing and such but it's great for anger management and a really good brand can take a beating from a bat. |

I hope you can get your drive sorted, it's never nice to lose data. Have you thought about your anger much? try a little meditation perhaps or even better why not get something that you can hit whenever you like, a large teddy bear or something like that. It would be bad to cause yourself lasting damage to your hands by hitting walls, you could damage the joints. Still though, I hope you get your files back. |

I've got a bag and find I can still chop my hands up pretty nicely on the seams if I don't bother to put bag gloves on! |

I've got a pair of the training pads that cover the hands and go all the way to the elbow. Also have a pair of shin/ankle guards for kicks cause yeah those bags can be pretty tough. |
