I wish it was a bit more like wing commander and less like Windows XP.

Wow, constructive post. Prepare to be flamed.

Have you put any thought into what it would be like to use joystick to maneuver a ship that is over a kilometer in length, for a large BS, or even the size of a 747 for a frigate?

Actually in a perfect world I'd wish EVE was a bit more of a twitch game then it is now, for no other reason then because I'd feel more "there" with the combat.

But of course, the the currently technology can't handle it, any lag would have huge consequences for combat and a lot of people really really don't want things to change.

And I'm guessing they won't.

My problem with anything twitch based is that I suck at it, and probably always will. EVE is about the only game I can play with other people where I really have a chance Sad

True, the lag is bad enough at the moment. However this would add a new dimension to the gameplay. In a recent interview to quote Nathan Richardsson
Quote:
...Populating immense asteroids with an industrial or pirate outpost, joystick-based combat inside asteroid dungeons
Smile So there may be some implementation of this in a future release.

On the other hand, CCP could perhaps make a console version of the game for the xbox 360 whereby players could fly frigs, interceptors etc purely focused on the combat aspect of the gameplay. PC gamers on command ships can direct the strategy while xbox 360 gamers dog fight it out. Balancing the game would be a huge challenege for CCP.
Anyway, Eve is still a masterpiece!

I'm so glad it's not twitch based. I like to feel I'm flying a spaceship not a WW1 biplane.

I want to be Jean Luc Picard camly sending my orders, albeit from my armoured pod, to my ship's crew - not flippin' Biggles!

There are already "Manned Fighters" in the database though, the usual drone-esque fighters but with skill requirements including Interceptors. These seem to be the test types for the small-scale twitch combat.

I'm all for this, as long as other ships are kept the same. I would not object to some more direct control over the ship input, even if I also like the doubleclicking, but I do not want to turn EVE into a twitch game - adding a twitch element just expands the game's horizons, in my opinion.

Just keep it away from the existing ships - frigates are not fighters! :O

Indeed, I'd be fine having a twitch game somewhere in there. But it needs to be something that doesn't affect the already existing game, like planetary flight and that kind of stuff. It would completely screw over balance having twitch elements combined with the current system. How would that even work? Confused

No clue yet; The twitch combat may be a separate part of the game, used simply for manned fighter missions into gigantic asteroids or things like that; OR Carriers and Motherships will be able to deploy player-controlled Fighters as well.

Let's adopt a wait and see approach ^^.

There's a reason I only play BF2142 once a month.

This one would never work. You can't have a twitch based combat system mixing with a system like EVE's directly, it just wouldn't work. On one hand you've got a guy moving all over the place, aiming and shooting as much as he likes, and the other a maths-based tracking system with a predetermined delay between each shot of each gun.

Doesn't really fit together does it Razz

I can just see the complaints now as people try to fight with fancy acrobatic maneuvers, their guns unable to hit the target because of the crazy gyrations the ship goes through.

The style of EVE imo is almost perfect for the game it is.

Older players are supposed to get better as the game goes on, which they do.. And that could totally be thwarted if the game became twitch based.

With a twitch based system, like CS or WoW, you have the probability that someone who is good at twitch and fast at learning games could be a lot better as soon as they start than someone who has steadily increased since Day 1 for many years. Which tends to make a lot of the older players quit, which IMO i'de prefer to hold the older players here compared to bringing in the twitch players.

Also, another consideration is lag. Twitch based systems suffer most from lag. And since a ships position doesn't really matter all that much, rather just server sent variables affecting how well you hit, the visual lag of the game doesn't affect your abilities in the game.

Think about the pro's and con's with changing a games entire way of playing and entire engine before making a comment like this please.
