What exactly is the benefit to salvaging, and which skills/equipment are required to do it?

Salvaging: Requires Mechanic III and Survey III to learn the Salvage skill.

Let's you salvage parts from destroyed vessels. Can be used to earn isk or farm parts for ship modifications. Salvaging can be very profitable, and can especially be done in tandem with agent missions to increase the thickness of your wallet. If you want money and will be doing agent missions a lot, this can be a good way to make money.

EDIT: And I forgot to mention, what you do is you mount a salvager, found in the market under Scanners, on your hi slot on your ship, and activate on a locked-on ship wreck to pull items out of and into your ship. Can be done on any ship wreck except drones IIRC.

In order to salvage you need to be able to use a Salvager. You need the Salvaging skill to at least level-1 and to get that you need at least Mechanic-3, Survey-3 and Electronics-1 (not too bad to train really). At higher skill levels in the Salvage skill you salvage faster.

Salvaging allows you to get components to build Rigs. You can either hang on to them if you intend to build your own or you can sell the salvaged components on the market. The components read like they are worthless stuff (Broken Drone Transceiver and such) but those are the parts. There are a few dozen different items that can be had this way and some are more rare than others and not all rats drop all types.

The reason to salvage is it is a fairly decent source of income. Best way to go about salvage is to make a dedicated loot monkey. Most find Destroyers ideal for this. 4xTractor Beams and 4xSalvagers and some cargo expanders and such. After a mission or ratting go back with your dedicated salvage ship and clean up.

Those are prereqs. The actual skill you need is Salvaging. At level 3, you can salvage any wreck in the game, including T2 ships. Higher levels increase the chance of success for each salvage cycle, but have no bearing on the type/quality of salving you extract - that's set at the time the ship pops, and you get what you get.

The module you need is a Salvager I. Target a wreck, and "shoot" it with the salvager. They have a 5km range. It may take several cycles, but once successful, the salvage goes into your cargohold and the wreck disappears (replaced with a container if there is still loot). Multiple salvagers on one wreck will increase your chance of success and speed up salvaging.

The Small Tractor Beam I is also a helpful module, as it can pull wrecks and containers toward your ship from 20km out at 500m/s. Destroyers make excellent salvage ships, being relatively inexpensive and having 8 high slots for multiple salvagers and tractor beams.

Note that the manufacturing of rigs also has prerequisites in the category of rig you intend to build, but they are only lvl 1 skills that are required for building. The skills are pretty cheap.

For example, if you intend to build shield rigs from blueprints and your salvaged materials, you would need Shield Rigging at 1.

The final thing is that certain types of rats and player ships only drop salvage in certain categories. Make sure to buy BPOs only for the types of salvage you will be gathering. Anything else would be wasting money on useless blueprints.

Not really. Depending on where you are at, you can get some off of the market fairly cheaply. Salvaging and rig making can be a good way to generate some isk.
