I lost a Raven today in a fleet battle because my client stopped responding. In a 5-10 minute battle, my screen updated about 5-10 times. It was terrible. I could not fight, and I could not retreat. The invading group appeared to have a lot better time with it.

I had my effects off, turrent effects off, no sound, local closed, no windows explorer open at the time. Everything I could think of was turned off.

So this is my thoughts on a solution to the lag issue during fleet engagements. I'm not sure if it would help, but just thinking about it, I thought it might.

When fleets engage fleets I propose a Tactical Mode and no graphics (if people choose to). Of course I would choose it 100% of the time if it reduced lag and it gave my fleet a better chance of victory.

I really don't care to have a visual at all. All I want are a list of players, distances, ship types, and my systems so I can shoot, use my mid slots, and get out of Dodge if necessary.

So if the servers/my client only have to process numbers and names it seems to me that would reduce the lag issue.

I agree. I would like something more like taking out all of the effects, making planets into spheres and taking away ship graphics so everyone looked like what drones do from a distance.

i dont know if this works but cant you zoom out(to the max) and use the overview to fight or is there still lag?ugh

Makes practically no diff. Same for most all other tweaks. About the only one that has any impact is the ramdisc hack and even that sounds hardly worth the effort.

yeah, I tried zooming way out, but that didn't help. We were on a gate and the 100 or so attackers jumped in. So I'm not sure if that causes the defender to lag/crash more or it makes things better for the ones jumping in. I've done both and had terrible lag both ways.

Hell even a wireframe fleet-ops mode would rock. Could color-code the ships based on standings to make things stand out better.

Or as the OP suggested, no graphics except maybe the icons and little squares.

DEFINITELY /signed Cool

Hey heres an idea: Upgrade the servers

ive seen other games run like warm silk with high numbers of players on screen. i dread to think what its going to be like with DX9 or god help us DX10 graphics if they dont improve.

How about buying a new graphic card? That should solve the graphical client based lag... Better I-Net connection DSL 2000 and up... -> solves the connection lag....

Graphics lag has nothing to do with the servers. It's their graphics engine, which, for its time, did a decent job, and your computer. Those are the only two variables in graphics lag.

Actualy graphic engine use more main cpu than cpu of grah card so there is something wrong here...

YES I agree!

to bad it's the non graphical part of game that might be causing some of this too.

but if not then I say yes!

small PvP would be fine with graphics on and everything would still be pretty. but 500 on 500 man battle would be possible.

boring maybe.

but would get the job done

personaly I want EvE in vectors lol

For graphic lag it must be linked to your graphic card and CCP's program only.

But Network and collisions lag could be reduced by replacing single ship by bigger objects like ship's formations. It will reduce the number of different path to calculate, the number of collisions to avoid, etc...

And it could be funny to invent a new formation !

I allways thought that myself but having fitted an X1950 512ram card in my aging AGP system (replacing a 9800pro) I have got a surprising framrate difference and to be fair a big improvement on the lag as well.

Cant wait till I get a dual core system with a dogsbollox GPU on it.
