I have a small question. Fighters sometimes act like drones (in terms of which skills and modules affect them) and sometimes not.

The skill Advanced Drone Interfacing (which I could learn now) is essentially only usable on a carrier or mothership. Do drone control units work on fighters or not - in other words will they give you more fighters in space or not?

Related question; do the drone range increasing units work - I suspect not, as fighters can be the other side of a system, but I don't know.

I'll be finishing BS V today; this is just to let me know whether I need to add another skill to the queue or not.

Yes, DCUs work on fighters.

Given that carriers have a 200% to fighter control range bonus, i would assume they can reach 4 times farther than your normal drones. If you delegate fighters, they will be subject to the controller's skills.

Advanced drone interfaceing is "essentially only usable on a carrier or mothership" - what does that mean? I trained up that skill and put 7 hammerheads in my Vexor, but can only use 5.. is this a limitation of the Ship? Because I am planning to use 9 or 10 drones at the same time with a dominix.. that will work right?

No. Read the skill description to find out why.

No, it will not work. There are 2 reasons for this:

1. Advanced Drone Interfacing allows the use of Drone Control Units( DCU's) which increase the number of drones you can control. The skill itself does NOT increase the number of drones you can control.

2. Carriers and motherships are the only ships that can fit DCU's because they require an enormous amount of CPU and only carriers and motherships get a bonus to a DCU's CPU use, kinda like barges and strip miners or covops and cov ops cloaks. So unless you're planning on flying a carrier there is no use what so ever in training Advanced Drone Interfacing

a correction:
Advanced Drone Interfacing lets you equip 1 extra Drone Control Units per level.. which lets you one more FIGHTER per module.

bottom line:
you can never launch more than five drones.
but you can launch more than five fighters.
end-of.

The description is unclear, but it's very possible to launch more than five drones at a time in a carrier.

no it isn't.
it's possible to launch more than five fighters.

the differences with Fighters is large enough compared to normal drones that you shouldn't call them 'drones'.
even if you pack your carrier full of drones, you will still only be able to launch 5 at a time.

... And like Gartel Reiman said, it's possible to get more drones in a Guardian Vexor, but there was only ever about ten of those in the game (they were rewards from an event two-three years ago) ... so they really don't count.

EDIT: after closer inspection of the Drone Control Unit I module, it does say 'drone' now... odd.
The Carrier itself has a bonus that only allows for more Fighters, however.

Have you ever tried it?

Obviously, no. Fighters == Drones for these purposes. If you have Carrier 5 and 5 Drone Control Units, you can release 15 drones, or 15 fighters. Same goes for a mothership, except with them, its 25. That's why mothership pilots are often seen using heavy drones; 20-25 (depending on fit) Ogre IIs HURT, and there's not the risk of losing 400mil worth of fighters to 1 smartbombing BS.

If we are talking about carriers...

then when useing drone control units, it increases the ammount of drones(be it drones or fighters) you can use. 1 per level.

You also get a bonus from the carrier skill(Caldari Carrier, Amarr Carrier....) of 1 per level(Different on motherships).

So if you have your skills up enough you can get say 12 fighters out, you can also get 12 drones out. Mining drones, T1 combat drones, logistics drones, drone sentries. Doesn't matter.

So if you max the skills you can get 15 drones out on a carrier(Some carriers can hold more though). Mother ships are similar, but can control more.

WCS Fit DCU Heavy
Carrier with 12 mining drone II.

If I ever train for carrier..I gotta do this..atleast once for the screenshot/fraps (mining veldspar in 0.0 of course).

(my corp mates would string me alive though.)

I know it's already been covered, but there seemed to be enough people in the wrong that it could use reinforcing :-P

Yes, you CAN launch as many drones as you can fighters. Obviously, your base 5 from skills, then up to 5/15 extra due to your skills in your carrier/mothership, and then up to 5 more through fitting DCU's.

Fighters ARE drones

Carriers have +fighers per lvl, Motherships get +3 fighters per lvl.

DCU are now +1 drones controlled. Allowing With Carrier 5 on a Thanatos, 10 drones and 5 fighters. or 15 fighters(or combination there of with more than 5 fighters, but not more than 10 drones). - skills and dCU's required.

Well, so those carriers releasing 11-13 OGRE II's to fry me were all evil cheaters then and the carrier pilot you are replying to is a liar ? Come on, train for a carrier first and give advice on such topics after that, CCP clearly ****ed up the description.

QFT, fly a carrier first, then you can say who is right and who is wrong! if you have carrier 5 and 0 drone control units you can use 10 drones of any type, from light scout drones through to fighters, and yes, 10 light scout drones. Same goes for drone control units, if I fit 5 DCU and have carrier 5, I can launch 15 drones or 15 fighters, or a mixture if i'm in a kinky mood.

Anyone who doubts this is welcome to come on the test server and I will show them.

How can you repetadly post such complete nonsense. Listen to the carrier pilots/people that have seen carriers in action... cause you don't have the faintest...

Yeah, 15 Drones or Fighters max for a Carrier. I do it all the time.

No, assigned Fighters don't use the controlling person's skills. They always use the Carrier pilot's skills. I normally have about a 185k locking range, and I never have a problem sending Fighters against anything I lock. No 'assignee' ever complained about having to close range. Therefore I have to assume that if you can lock it, you can attack it with Fighters. The only skill needed by the 'asignee' is the Drones skill, so they can control up to 5 Fighters.

On the other note: Don't laugh about mining with a Carrier. I know many people flame me for this, but consider:

15 Harvester Drones at 75 m3 per minute + flight time. (Yes, I said 75. I know it says 30, but I get 75.)

That's better than a Covetor with normal Strip Miners. Then add in:
- Mining bonuses from gang skills
- Ability to tank rats
- Ability to carry 13,500 space unmodified.
- Ability to switch to full combat mode by switching drones.
- Run a gang module giving 25% boost to mining by losing one drone control unit.

Please consider the above list carefully before flaming about Carriers mining. Oh, and to pre-emptively strike down one Flamer: before the recent Invention price decrease, a T2 Fitted Hulk could get close to the price of a Carrier. So people are already 'putting billions of isk into a belt'.

And YES, I've lost a Carrier while mining. But it took 25 people to do it, and it was before the hitpoint buff for capitals.
