The problems CCP are currently having to handle are a major issue which is going to take time to fix. Any environment running as a complex cluster is a nightmare to support let alone upgrade. As we know the system also takes sometime to restart, so CCP can not just make small changes and do a quick reboot to see if a fix works.

The staff at CCP have been working for 16-18 hours so far and still seem to be hard at it.

Everyone seems to have issues with the game at the momment, but CCP are showing a high level of commitment.

If anything I think they should just shut the system down for the night and come back to it after some sleep.

lol what you mean nothing to show for it? read the patch notes, sounds like there is a lot to show for it.

My guess is that everyone involved will have aged at least a year since the first time they restarted the servers.

Been their, done that, and got the gray hairs to prove it.

Relic Iím with u bro, CCP has apologized and taken full responsibility, I commend them for that, while it is bad business practice to miss promised deadlines, I still commend them.

First of all... do you actually think CCP is trying to do this on purpose? or that they arent hurrying? I'm sure they have been working on it non-stop.

Second, we all complained about lack of content, and no tech they bring it to us, and you complain about a patch taking a day.... Which one would you rather have? All this new content, or ONE day of gaming?

have to admit though, it is annoying.

I decided to stay up until the "patch is expected at 00:30GMT" and when i came back at 00:30 it was 01:30.

I understand that this is a complex procedure, but CCP got very optimistic with the expected downtime. They've got a rep for doing this..

I wouldnt mind if they said it will take 2 weeks, as long as they said it would take 2 weeks to begin with. Or atleast say its not ready until it's ready, then i cannot complain :)

Anyway, off to bed.. hopefully the people stateside will get a glimpse of tech2 while im asleep Smile

well i dont mean to bust on ccp but if they can't make a change in the game and have it up and running in 18hours they need to go back to school and learn how to program. i've never seen anything like this in any games i've played. Rolling Eyes

Good thing the forum mods aren't the developers themselves, or else we'd NEVER see the servers come online.

I've never seen anything like this in any game i've played either. Neither have i played a game quite like Eve. I say CCP announce the patch for 12:00 GMT and get some kip.

Bah, Relic. But the people here on the forums are providing so much entertainment.

Beer: Check
Popcorn: Check
Game to play windowed: Check
Forum full of people jonesing harder than a yuppy driving his BMW through South Central at 3am looking for a fix: Mega-Check

CCP earned their .43 cents of today's monthly subscription simply by turning the forums back on Twisted Evil

This from a voice of experience of working in IT

the devs have probably said it will take a day or whatever to do this patch.....but management have said you have 4 hours (the original expected downtime)

(any IT managers out there)

I have had to work under these conditions in the past..... and got myself busted for missing their deadlines when I told them when I started the job that I couldnt do the requested job in the time requested

we wont mind just tell us PLEASE

I gotta say give CCP time to sort this out. Has any of these folks flaming CCP done this themselves? I would say not. But the forums are proving a good source of amusment whilst waiting to see how slow my Scorp is gonna fly...

I agree completely,

Things in the online gaming world have improved a great deal from the old days of the launching Ultima Online and Everquest.

EQ in particular used to be called Neverquest, and web sites used to have the "You have been disconnected..." screen of death. And it WAS the screen of death, because chances were, if you were doing anything remotely dangerous, like running in a mountainous area, you would die.

These games are complex. Yeah clusters can be pretty scalable and stuff, and pretty stable under Unix, but stuff can still go wrong. People are still pushing the technology edge in these games forward, and one of those companies pushing the edge is CCP, in my opinion.

I'm sure they will have it resolved soon.

Decilius is probably dead-on. I've been in an IT project development position before where we were pushed so hard to meet an unrealistic deadline that our budget got shot to hell and back by having to outsource some of the code in order to meet the timeline, and when the project completed we all got laid off because of the budget overage.

We did meet the 4 month deadline for what was supposed to be a 14-22 month project, but it cost us our jobs. Mad

The moral of this story is that management rarely understands the technology, and understands what it takes to make things happen even less.

Combine this knowledge with the fact Eve runs on a Windows-based back-end (there's a reason the big MMOs all run on Nix) and you are in for one hell of a ride.

Like most of you, I would be happy just with a realistic downtime statement. I don't care if the server goes down for 16 hours... just tell me that it's going down for 16 hours. Don't tell me it'll be 8 hours, then go 16. That's when I get upset.

However, as long as we all keep pumping cash into these MMOs the companies behind them don't have a lot of incentive to change the way they do things.
