ok ... long story short - yesterday i played a game with one of my buddies we both shared the bill for - you know we're both quite broken, so we decided to split the costs. can't remember the name of this game - but i know it was a strategy game. on a board. hmm .. uhm .. ahem .. dunno. well it was a strategy game where you had to conquer the world.

well we played for several hours - in the beginning we had both the same amount of countries under our control. but with a bit of luck and solid strategy i was able to take half of his countries. he only had a foothold in west-africa and a stronghold in south america i think. that foothold kept me away from getting to south america where he had his mass of troops.

why i didn't attack from north america?? well .. this was the first time the odd thing happened.

when i tried to attack from this side he only told me: "you're not allowed to do this." my reply only "wtf!!? why not" ... *silence* ... "is it so hard to comprehend - if you would be allowed to attack me now from north america i likely get destroyed, but as i paid the same amount as you for this game - you know, the box, the board and all that stuff, so i'm allowed to make the rules so that i can enjoy the game longer." to solidify this he built a wall out of some LEGO and put it there right into the place - to keep my troops out of south america.

i go silent. i think about it. yeah - he might be right. he invested money into this game, and he also invested time we played now - and all he got was ending up in south america with hundreds of unwashed soldiers scaring away the local people. did he deserve it because he had no sort of strategy?? thinking about it - nope, he didn't deserve it. as he also paid for the game.

so we played on - we were fighting a fierce battle in africa. after long long time my strategy did work out. i broke up his blob and advanced in direction of his main base south america. before i could conquer his last foothold in africa the second odd thing happened.

i'll prepare my assault on his foothold ... *silence* ... i look up ... he looks at me ... "don't do this." ... *silence* ... "why not?" i ask. "you allready tried to attack me from north america. luckily my rules of the game safed me from destruction. as you try to do it now again i think you only want to cause me grief. you're an ebil person. i don't know why i started playing the game with you." i look in shock at him. "what??!" i ask puzzled.

"all you want to do is to destroy me on the gameboard - but i'm a nice person. so i have to conclude that you're an evil man." "but i thought the aim of the game is to conquer THE WHOLE world on this board??" "yes, that's correct. but that doesn't change the fact that you're an evil evil man for attacking me."

"uhm ... ok .. so what's the point in this game then? if i try to follow the idea behind the game - you know the 'control the whole world' thingy - you'll start bending the rules. if i don't stop attacking you on this gameboard i'm an evil person. so why did we start playing in the first place?"

"well ... i paid for this game the same amount as you - so i have a right to enjoy it the same amount as you. if i lose this game because i made mistakes i can't enjoy the game anymore. do you see the point??

i can't enjoy the game if you're on the winning side and i'm on the losing side. you don't have any honour if you don't see this - you played the game after the rules on the box. i was losing ... so i had to use my 'mighty wall of invincible LEGO' to keep you away from destroying me. but you didn't stop. you still want to destroy all my assets i have in south america. you MUST be a griefer if you don't realize, that those rules on the box don't like me. as i'm run out of LEGO to prevent you from conquering my last foothold in africa, you didn't see it that your actions cause harm to me if i can't use my LEGO wall. so i have to conclude your an evil guy."

well after this words i told him to learn how to play the game and not to bend the rules everytime he is facing certain defeat. well he didn't like this - i was fast enough out of his house, as he was preparing some wood, some petrol and a few matches. he was wearing also a "burn the witch" t-shirt and mumbling something of "burning evil people" or so.

now i'm not sure if i should play again with my buddie. Sad

<disclaimer: if you're living in south america - and feel slightly annoyed by this story - please blame my buddy for it Razz >

read some of the current arguments in a certain debate on this forums and you'll see some similarities. Wink

and NO - it's NOT a comment on alliances - so don't use it for forum propaganda.

Yeah, this whole 'everyone has to win (or not lose) to have fun' thing is getting really old.

So your either a PVPer and think you should be able to kill anyone anywhere or your a cearbear and think you should be safe everywhere.

This is not ---- this is eve if you dont like the way that CCP has made the game find another game to play.

That's a particularly good analogy and very pertinant considering some of the debate in this forum at the moment, nice one.

later i talked to him on the phone again about the game.

me: "didn't you a bit overreact with the 'burn ebil ones' thingy??"

him: "maybe .. a tiny little bit. but i still think that this invincible wall of LEGO is right."

"..."

"yeah - the gamedesigners won't punish me for using it, and it's nowhere stated that it's not allowed."

"uhm .. maybe the gamedesigners didn't expect you were using LEGO to safe yourself from the consequences of your mistakes. and if they have stated 'thou shall not use LEGO for saving your ass!', you'd likely would have used playmobil, or matchboxes or palisades of tooth picks. and how should they monitor you when we play this game?? they designed this games decades ago. or do you expect some old greyhaired man to appear magically behind you and patting you on the fingers saying: 'don't bend the well known rules of this game little boy, only to safe your assets in south america!' if we agreed from the beginning that we play by your rules using the 'invincible wall of LEGO' maybe it would have been fun. but then i'm wondering - why didn't the gamedesigners include it from the beginning? maybe they were concered that this game would become a boring stalemate between 'invincible walls of LEGO'. just a thought."

"uhm .. ahem .. you suck - you're a griefer"

*click* and *dialling tone*

so i'm still Sad

That post was about as subtle as somebody displaying displeasure by launching a ton of bricks through somebody else's window.
