Forgive me being a bit newbish, have been in the game about 8 months. Not too clear on if carriers can use jump/acceleration gates, enter high security space, or dock at stations. As the point draws close for me to try out low sec space for real, not just running around hiding and running a mission or two, thought something a bit more sturdy would be in order.

Not looking to start a war, just want something so can fly out to a pos, and if some gate pirate is ganking people can pulverize him or at least tank the dmg and chase him around with fighters while I alighn for warp. And yes, may well take it to run missions if can get it through the acceleration gates. Razz Ignoring a powerful resource is pointless, this game is both pvp and pve. The combination of this in Eve is one of the major reasons that the game is so enjoyable to me, and quite likely to many others.

Carriers can't use jump gates. They can use some of the higher acceleration gates(I believe its either 8/10 and up, or maybe only the 10/10s) And the only way to move them is jumping via cyno fields, so you'll need some friends/alts. If by the POS comment you mean taking it to a hostile POS, don't. A well setup carrier will be able to take some hits from a deathstar, but it certainly won't take many. As for chasing pirates, the fighters do follow people into warp, but they can tend to be a bit slow (If they are in a smallish ship, they can move from SS to SS and the fighters may never catch up to them properly) But if your only objective is to clear the gate, then yes, a carrier would be an excellent deterrant. Also, carrier without a support fleet is easily killed by a decent size gang, so I highly recommend against using them solo. Oh yeah, you can't take cap ships into highsec either.

P.S. If you've only been playing for 8 months, then you can't be anywhere close to a carrier, so I suggest you stick to smaller ships . Also, carriers aren't really useful for running about in lowsec, they are primarily for fleet ops and logistics (jumping stuff around in safety).

Being newbie is perfectly fine, being lazy to skip forum stickies not so. I think the posted Carrier FAQ does answer your questions.

In short anyway: can use some complex gates (and is IMHO even too good for such purposes), cannot jump to >=0.5 systems, can dock on stations.

And for low secs: rather try beat the things there in cheap ships or gangs. Taking an unexperienced carrier out is a receipt for losing billions. Then again, a carrier can skip all gatecamps.

Thanks for all the useful info. And no I'm not too lazy to read stickies, though still can't find the carrier FAQ sticky. Razz However am lazy in general. Wink

Sounds like the carrier won't be for me, main reason wanted it was a secure mode of travel that could fight back effectivly. Tried a battleship but that didn't work out too good. One on one perhaps, never yet met a pirate that didn't have a gang with or right behind them though. =/ Yeah, can't fly it yet, just planning out my next couple of months training in advance. The great info has saved me a lot of wasted training, as well as some good reading to boot.

Hope CCP either makes the Abaddon a drone carrier, or makes a tech 2 fleet escort battleship. As it is, feels like battleship is a glass ceiling for those that prefer to solo. Certainly there are smaller tech 2 ships, their way to expensive to risk though unless one has a billion or so to just toss around.

Don't group Razz

Seriously thouugh my preferance is to solo most of the time. There is no politics, no wondering if my gangmates will react the same way, no wasted time discussing what to do. Just me in the black, doing whatever I please. Very Happy
