I'm a week old noob who was happily venturing out into my first 0.4 sec space experience, fighting some rats, when I hear this odd chirping noise. I glance around and I suddenly notice... Ah! I'm being targeted! ... by someone with -9.0 security status! CRAP!

I hit the autopilot button, but I forgot to set it. Double crap!

By the time I select a destination, I'm webbed! Oh noes!

I immediately set a course for way-the-hell-out and hit my afterburners. But he's still gaining on me! Allright, I'll turn around and fight!

Nosferatus before I even get within weapons range!

Soon enough I was immobile and without any cap. left. I had a good chuckle as he had me scrambling for a good minute, and it was an exhilerating experience, being pirated for the first time.

I await the ransom demand on local, and I open up my wallet and start counting out a few million I have spare. BOOM! My ship suddenly explodes!

My pod is scrambled/snared as well and *then* comes in the ransom demand. "15 million and I let you live."

Now - correct me if I'm wrong - but I'm a week-old noob who doesn't likely have 15 million; I just found out what an implant was, and don't have any; I'm fully insured; and I'm about 8 jumps away from home base.

So let me get this straight. Mister Smarty-pants pirate is offering me two choices: He'll conveniently blow me up, sending me back to my HQ with my spare shiny ship; or, I can give him 15 million isk, and drift slowly back to base with no guarantee to my safety on the way back anyway.

Well, mister pirate (you know who you are), I'm making it my mission to save up 15 million and put it up as a bounty on your head. Let's just call it a stupidity tax. Talk before you shoot next time. ;)

That's how it goes sometimes. FYI though, don't put the money into a bounty as he can simply get a friend to kill him and they can split the bounty or whatever, though a -9 guy may want to try to get as big a bounty as possible. Personally, if you are podded in a lame manner, I think putting the minimum bounty - 5k - is the way to go, sort of saying "you are not even worth a real bounty because you are lame".

You're a week old noob who starts counting out a FEW MIILION ISK YOU HAVE SPARE?!?!?!?
Wow, either you have some generous friends or *snip*

Don't even bother to pay a ransom when you're that new, you pay ransoms when you want to save the hassel of fitting an expensive ship and/or saving implants.

Few things.

Why did you set an destination on autopilot instead of just warping out?

Don't put a bounty on his head. It will just make his e-peen grow.

And a little advice, I recommend learning to watch local and your overview better. If you were watching local, you would know he was in system. And if you were watching your overview he wouldn't have snuck up on you.

And lastly, you're lucky he wasn't to bright, he could have webbed and scrambled you, and held you hostage. Some people will start to pay to be podded after long enough in a situation like that.Twisted Evil

tbh alot of newer playes dread lowsec.

while alts with pirate implants already know the dangers, and frequent alot.

so it seems stupid to u(which to most would), but he could have got that above alt and made 15.

Another thing you rookies can do is access your overview settings by clicking on that "sideways" triangle on the overview window. and going thru and make sure everything is set the way you want to set it. You can adj what you want on there by doing that. Also if something is on there that you no-longer want to jave on there the just simply rite click on it and select remove from over view...that works great but can also be really annoying to as right next to that option is "target" But anyways by going thru your settings in the over view u can highlight the stuff you want to highlight even make them blink. Just my 2 cents of info for all you rookies out there. Cool

ehm, did you get podded by me? i normally ask 10-15 mill por pod, not because I think you're worth it or you can afford it, but because thats how I value that delicious *splat* you get when popping a pod.

I'm afraid I pod too many newbies to keep the count thou, after having moved regions I seem to meet so many fresh players its hard to keep track.

I had an alt about... 2 years? ago... Played for a month and just did mining in 0.8+ space. Quit for a long time, rejoined last week and started fresh. This is my first foray into combat. I'm doing a lot of research and chatting with a lot of folks in-game getting a feel for how combat and PvP works, so if I sound more knowledgable than a standard one-week n00b that's why. :) (it's also why I have a nice inheritance.)

One thing I still can't grasp - Why do some of you evil pirate types not ransom? What if I did have mazillions in my pocket? What harm is there in a quick 1 minute conversation? Or better question yet; what have you to lose?

I know my little frigate & mods is worth less than $300K, but I have deep sentimental attachment to them. I give them little pet names and now I'm up to Fluffy III. I would pay well more than it's worth to keep flying it :(

Thanks for the advice on not placing a bounty; any recommendations on exacting some sort of justice on this player who is obviously much more talented/rich than me?

Kublai: Nah, wasn't you :) I'm a chattybish in-game, you'd remember. :)

I never even said I had 15 million.. that's what the pirate was demanding! I happened to have $2 million on me (my vast riches! yarrr!), which I was prepared to give up to keep Fluffy II alive. Fluffy II, last I checked, wasn't a battleship - it was a $300K frigate (with all mods in). I forget what it's real name is... It kinda looks like an X-Wing crossed with a Pod-Racer (Minmatar).

I was saying I'm making it my mission to raise $15 Million just to put down a bounty, but now that doesn't seem like the best idea...

Hehe, yes, bad call on my part - but I thought all the *real men* went down to 0.0 and 0.1 space, and all the noob pirates would be in .3 and .4 space. Wink

The strength of the NPC rats and the bounties they offer. That's the only difference coded in-game.

0.4 I find to be more dangerous as a lot of.. well, people like the OP, venture in there to see what it's like, so players camp the gates more often there.

As you go down in security, you'll find there's rarer and rarer ores, which players will defend more and more (since they're rarer and harder to get), but in-game mechanics-wise, as far as I know, 0.4 is just as safe as 0.1 space (possibly 1 or 2 less sentry guns on gates in 0.1 as opposed to 0.4 but don't quote me on that).

It was a retorical question, being a pirate I dont give a rats ass about the rats :)

And to say you have fiercer fighters guarding fiercer rats and rarer ore is not true at all, as you are more likely to run into hostile pirates and anti's in the more populated .4 systems, making them in my opinion by far more dangerous than low populated 0.1 systems, anyone can kill a ratting setup ship.

I was answering for the benefit of the newer players as several of them have posted in this thread.

Did I not say that I've found 0.4 to be more dangerous than 0.1 because of the amount of player pirates that hunt newer and weaker players, and indeed, anyone they can fire at?

EDIT: Yup, I'm pretty sure I said "0.4 I find to be more dangerous as a lot of.. well, people like the OP, venture in there to see what it's like, so players camp the gates more often there."

Damn, that's some hard luck, stupid pirates ftl, anyway, if the bugger DOESN'T already have a bounty, feel free to put a 5000 isk bounty on his head, it's a good ammount that isn't worth farming and it mostly just works to draw attention to him, which is that last the a pirate wants when he huntingYARRRR!!. When you blow the ship up, you get some of the modules that he had fitted. Maybe something very valuable is inside...
That you're willing to pay more than its worth for your ship is pretty rare in EVE i suppose - still, i think that ransomning pays better.
Got a True Sansha armor hardener once from a cruiser though YARRRR!!. But he blocked my ransom request, and until he had convoed me again he had popped.

So, popping a ship instead isnt pointless. What is pointless is attacking a week old rooky who is hunting in the belts in 0.4. Period.
