I'm orbitting a Battleship at 500 metres firing my little peashooters at it for all I'm worth, Suprisingly I've got it's shield down to 50% using only frigate guns. Then he fires. The Heavy mod beam slams into the side of my condor as a helpful dialogue proclaims that... "Tico [FCC0] Completely Misses you."

muh?

I'd really really like it if when somebody "completely" misses me the shot actually flies off ito deep space never to be seen again rather than falsely impacting on my hull to do 0 damage.

It would add more atmosphere and stuff.

Yeh I've always thought that was a bit silly. Would be nice if missed shot actually missed.

I agree, but why the hell is this thread called "Hypocrisy" instead of "Combat Visuals" or "Represent Misses Accurately" or something?

In reference to the fact maybe?? Miss, mass doesnt matter in space......

It is funny, that a shot which missed still hits you, but its easier to code the graphics engine to show a single animation.

Some imbecills only ever use the harshest words around to alert the world to their constant distress in failing to grasp reality.

It's titled Hypocrisy because it is. And a rather entertaining one too. Reminds me of kids playing with pretend guns

"BANG! I SHOT YOU!"

"NO YOU DIDN'T!"

"YES I DID! YOU'RE DEAD!"

etc

Hypocrisy has to do with double standards, what does this have to do with double standards? It simply shows a brushing of the ship for 0 damage rather than displaying a miss, it's not even close to being a double standard.

It's not possible to "brush" a ship for 0 damage when the ship being brushed is a condor frigate and the weapon doing the brushing is a heavy Mod Beam.

You get "brushed" by one of those and your limping home. It says "Completely missed" That suggests the turret missed by a good dozen metres or so.

And basiclaly: It would look and feel much cooler if when you're in a frigate (as I so frequently am) bullets and lasers are streaming past you as you manage to dodge their every shot. Rather than every single shot impacting for 0 damage.

Also: If you intend to call somebody in Imbecile then take the 20 seconds it needs to look it up and spell it right.

As was said, more coding to do animations.
You want MORE lag in PVP to deal with these to satisfy your need for perfection.
*sighs*

Yes I do. Besides it could easily be a client side effect and have no effect on the lag as a result.

Indeed it would be a client side item as the data needed to perform this action is already being sent.

Hypocrisy means "wearing a mask" to be literal (it dates from Greek actors, who did so), or more realistically, it means to claim one thing while actually being another. Which fits the thread perfectly.

I agree that most people wouldn't use it in this sense, because it's a word usually considered to be insulting and/or denigrating. But it *is* technically correct. Smile

Your ship has shields, it's only your imagination which prevents that beam from touching the surface of that shield and still do no damage, i.e miss the ship.

I want to have 2000 different animations for ship damages and explosions too but that's just not in the cards now is it!?

For the record what I propose is not an animation. When a weapon is fired the client draws a line between the gun firing and the target and plays the firing effect along that line (You only notice this with the large lasers but the effect actually moves with the target ship so Hybrid and projectile shots actually curve in the direction of the targets movement).

To arrang eit so weapons fire that misses your ship does in fact miss you need only take the location of the target, and position the end point of the effect (remember the effect is calculated between two points in space) +/-(X+Y) metres from the ships location.

X = Ships signature radius
Y = Random Value between 1 and the ships signature radius

It's important to add the ships signature radius to this calculation so the effect isn't drawn as passing through the ship. This would ensur ethat all shots that miss only just skim past the ship and detonate not far away.

It's not exactly a huge change to the existing system. Or at least how I would have coded the existing system. The particle effects don't change just the point in space it gets drawn to.

It isn't alot of work.

Yep. Sounds to me like you are suggesting they get rid of a bug. That bug increases the work by drawing an uneccesary parrticle animation that doesn't represent the actual game situation. Sounds good to me.
