for eve the download is free, but you pay 19.95 for the cdkey and get the first month's subscription for free

i guess you get some kind of discount at direct2drive

If d2d is charging you for just the client for 14.95, wouldn't that be breaking some sort of law? I'd guess they've just got something like lots of orginal boxes or something, and they just give you the client and one of the CD keys.

trying to make you pay for free software is nothing new

in this case, however, the game ships with 30days of playtime - which is worth what they are charging first time

WHen you pay that 14.95 you pay for a account, simple as that. Sure the client is free, always has been, but you wont make it far without an account ;)
