Thanks StoreSlem , but what I guess Im looking to hear is if you (or anyone replying ) were gonna pick one cruiser for yourself wich would it be and why. Again oppinionated oppinions are welcome.

Moa has a larger powercore, more cpu, one less turret. You can mount an extra gun on a Thorax but it will most defidently have to be either a dual 150mm railgun (which sucks) or a small 150mm railgun (which is ok for a small gun).

Neither ship can really mount more than 3 250mm Railguns without a messload of reactor controls and engineering4.

If you want to mine, the Thorax is the best choice, especially using Drones. For overall combat effectiveness, the Moa is probably better.

In combat they can probably be equally effective.

I used to prefer the Moa for the Thorax, but since getting the Thorax, I changed my mind.

As a mining ship, the Thorax rocks. I also have a nice 3 x 250mm Rail set-up for npc hunting on the Thorax. With the all the low slots on the Thorax, I managed to get a cap recharge rate of 184 seconds and a max capacitor of 1158. That is a ratio of 6.29 capacitors/second. My cap recharges so fast that I can use the 3 railguns and my capacitor balances at 70%, meaning I can have sustained railgun fire and when the firing stops, I still have a large part of my cap for shield boosting or whatever.

If you can make the Moa work so that 2 missile slots = 1 turret slot on Thorax, then both ships are quite good.

Life. Universe. Everything.

The Thorax because it's more versatile, i.e. Mining, Fighting. Also in combat there very similar but what makes the Thorax better is the combat drones and that extra high slot for a smart bomb. Just my opinion but I've looked at all the stats for the cruisers. Owned a Thorax and a Maller and well I'll never own anything but a Thorax again.

Posted - 2003.07.17 04:43:00 - [8]

Thorax is a great way to make cash with mining, other than that i dont really use it for combat situations since wasps cost about 50-55k to make. You lose those to quick to use them in 0.0 sectors, 2 missles and there gone...

The moa however is great for combat situations, specially short lasting ones since heavy missles and torpedo's take loads of space if you want to use them alot in a long combat situation. With their high shield, i say its a good cruiser to jump in a conflict and do a large amount of damage to retreat afterwards and get away with it unharmed, even with large power against you.

I prefer the Moa. I like the extra Med slot for more shielding and speed. The Thorax is the better miner though...hands down. Also, I can hit a Cap recharge of 158 with 1208 Cap capacity with a Moa ;-). And still have room for two hardners and a medium clarity ward, but only 2-250mm rails, with the extra turrets I use a Heavy Ion Blaster and a Medium Focused Pulse. The other two Hi-slots are whatever I feel like.

I like my would be strange to have a ship with no missles, and I really don't use drones much so the Thorax really isn't my kinda ship, although it does look alot sexier.

For PvP, the Moa is better with the extra medium slot, extra high slot, and launcher hardpoints; for NPC pirates, the Thorax is better with the extra low slot, the extra turret hardpoint, and the extra +25% damage bonus.

Look, chances are you wont get a BS quickly, that you be at the cruiser lvl for a long time. I say try them both, its what I'm doing. Sure, it takes longer to train but I plan to play this game for the next year or two so whats a week more of training?

Thorax wins.

In combat they are about tied, having 8 heavy drones on the Thorax might put you over the top.. they can deal some nasty ass damage.

And btw, its possible to put 5 250mm rails on a Thorax :) I've got 4 so far, need 100mw more for that 5th one >_<

putting 5 650mm arts is quite feasable and leaves plenty core for med slots or otherwise, two rails and two arts with either a SB or small gun is a good setup for npc combat, 3 rails, two arts for pvp :)

plus Thorax is just t3h seXiest cruiser around.. it wins in the looks department BY FAR

Agreed, 8 Drones can pack a nasty punch. But I use smartbombs, usually shockwaves (52 damage) to mediums (80 damage). And Drones don't bother me all that much. This is getting to be a pretty standard setup since gate campers are starting to use Drones in the same capacity that they used to use jetison cans. Very effective since this creates lag and can fight back.

Moa is still my choice of ships.

I currently fly a MOA. You can fit the ship realllly well... 4 turrets and 2 launchers?!?! launchers are always good. Drones are good too, but with a smartbomb that will take care of the drone problem. I will have a thorax sooon. Then I will really be able to test them both

Posted - 2003.07.18 07:45:00 - [17]

Yeah, the Thorax is definitely the best looking cruiser on the block, I think we're all agreed the Maller, Rupture and Moa won't win any beauty contests. First the Moa: It's got a nice hislot setup with 4 turrets 2 launhcers, more medium slots are always good for your stasis webs (imo, no cruiser should be without one), shield hardeners, shield boosters, etc. I like more powercore and CPU. A LOT. It let's you get bigger guns. Another interesting difference (which no one thus far has pointed out) is that the Moa has more shield and less armor. This means EM and thermal will be a lot more effective against a Moa with no resist platings or hardeners.

Thorax. I have one word: DRONES. If you have level 5 drone and level 5 interfacing skills this is THE cruiser to get. This also makes it superior in mining (discounting it's superior turret count). Already mentioned the resist differences. Not much more I have to say about the Thorax other then that.

Okay, here it goes: The Moa is better at combat (especially PvP) overall, however the Thorax is better at harassing the enemy, taking on frigates, and, of course, mining.

I personally have never owned EITHER of these cruisers. And I'm not planning to buy either of them either. I'll stick with my Maller, which bests them both at overall combat, imo.

That is why you run a 70% thermal resist and 70% em resist shield module. =]

Posted - 2003.07.18 12:59:00 - [19]

Yeah, it's also why I would choose a Moa over a Thorax if I had to choose, I never have as many medium slots as I'd like on my Maller. Four medium slots = good.

Moa wins hands down.

If you calculate it all you can get more MW and cpu. Yeah is has one less low slot but the base power is enough above the Thorax to allow the Moa higher numbers. As for cap I can run 2 AB's and 4 250mm rails continously and still have cap for a med shield booster. The 2 missile slots are just icing on the cake!

Well, you CAN fit 5 250mm rails on a thorax - with *9* MW left over. Not really a lot! If you're lucky you can fit 5 guns draining cap, nothing to recharge the cap and a shieldbooster that will drain even more cap. :P

More than 4 rails = overkill. Unless you use 7-8 250mm on a battleship, which would seem pretty... weird.

I guess I just have one question.

Wtf is an "opinionated opinion"?

Posted - 2003.07.19 04:01:00 - [23]

MOA WINS NO CONTEST. I fly a Moa and my friend flys a Thorax. We have fights and we dont kill each other i always win firing 2 heavy missles is great. Plus if you choose your missles proporly Moa comes out on to

pure combat? the moa wins....which is good, because that's all that hidious beast is good at. pure combat vessal.

the Thorax is a GREAT combat ship, 4 heavy rails are nothing to sneeze at, added with 10 medium, or 8 heavy drones it packs a sirious punch. as for everyone who says "oooh i use a smart bomb!" a medium smart bomb does 100 damage every 10 seconds, it would take 30 seconds to kill a heavy drone.

if combat lasts THAT long, you dont need to be there to begin with

I cast my vote for the least for combat ops.

I place all my faith in shields, since they are your first line of defense and regenerate automatically. With a 1200 base shield capacity, the Moa starts out ahead of every cruiser in the game. Add some medium shield extenders or some tactical shield hardeners, and the Moa can be a very tough ship to crack.

As for it's striking capabilities, 6 high slots (4 turret and 2 launcher) offer excellent flexibility. Any ship that lacks launcher capability has one strike against it, in my opinion. The ability to use heavy missles in PvP can not be underestimated. And since the Thorax lacks this capability, it demonstrates a fundamental weakness. This is also why the Moa is superior to the Maller.

Its systems loadout is ideal as well. Four medium slots are hard to beat, and more than compensate for the presence of only 4 low slots. The cpu is the best of any cruiser, and the power core is second only to the Maller.

Yep...the Moa is the premier combat cruiser in EVE.

i have flown the moa in the beta
superb ship, nothing to say against it
but, as many have written here, the THORAX is not a superb, but a very good combat-ship
and for the mining-job, there is nothing better around Very Happy
so, i prefere the thorax, "filled" with 8 drones, and a nice set of 250-rail's
in the last week, only few came close enough to "feel" the drones Wink

update, ...stupid hornet Laughing
if i fight, i use the setup above, for the mining-part, i mount some "better" mining-laser's, no power-problems, no cpu-problems..
only the cargo could be bigger Smile

You know that patch where CCP said that no one should be able to take out 4 or 5 heavy pirate cruisers solo? It doesn't apply to me and my Moa. I can handle, without ever getting below 50% shields, 3 Angel Depredators and 1 Predator in my ships current config. I have corp mates in Thoraxes who, even with their ogre drones, have significant trouble with this simply because or running out of cap and missing the extra med slot. The Thorax does win the looks department, tho. Very Happy

With the cost of cruiser class vessels relatively cheap why not buy both and have the best of both worlds

Close range combat the Thorax will own the MOA hands down.

Long range is trickier to decide but i believe the MOA has the upper hand.
