Hey gang, so I am a moderately light SP toon (18 mil) that is loojing for some of tge slightly more risky PVE, but can not seem to get a straight answer. I currently solo L4s in A Rattlesnake (allows me to AFK and pkay at work) but I am looking for something to fly and do during "real" play hours.

I love WH ops, and would enjoy plexes if u could ever find one that had more than just cruisers and frigates (i know, I know, get my butt to null sec for those). I would love to.get into Incursions as well. Money is not really an issue for me as I can run 10-12 missions a day at work.

So here is where I do get stuck, I enjoy passive shield tanjs, I enjoy missiles, I enjoy drones. So I was drawn to Caldari with a smattering of Drones (Rattlesnake being a good choice). But the RS while a great AFK ship, does DPS like a wet noodle and in a WH the drones die in seconds. Any time I attmept to get into an Incursion I get the "If you want in, dont fly Caldari). The drake is great fun, but again hits like a limp weed.

I have a Tengu, I have a Nighthawk (which I thought would be awesome but eberyone tells me its DPS is also crap). I can not stand the raven. Is there any hope for me? Or should I just suck it up and slowly change race ships? What can give me some good DPS while staying missiles and passive shield? Or are these oxymorons?

Any NH pilots or Straight Caldari pilots have any insight.as to ways to both be effective and still enjoy your ships?

I don't have time to make a full reply to this topic, but with Tengus you can hit 700+ damage with heavy missiles and RIDICULOUS amounts of tank. With HAMs, bump that up to more like 900 dps (or thereabouts).

It's probably the most versatile pve ship in the game.

I'm afraid not! No hope at all, please give me all your stuff.

Rattlesnake with good skills delivers way more than wet-noodle DPS. My standard sleeper PvE 'fleet' in C4 w-system was a snake and a tengu. The tengu tanked them better but the snake delivered better DPS. Drones do get targeted, and some sites are worse than others, but 90% of the time I headed back to the POS with all drones safely back in the bay.

A machariel, or other projectile equipped ship, would be able to deliver better DPS ... but would not have been able to tank like either the snake or the tengu without substantial remote repping.

Caldari, and part-caldari, ships are popular for most PvE combat because they can be setup with very good shield tanks and can project reasonable levels of DPS over pretty long ranges. Not many ships will give you the passive / semi-passive tank of a snake.

The price you often pay for that reliability is the lacklustre levels of DPS, and the delay in delivering that damage.

The reason they're not so popular for many incursion fleets is the delay in DPS delivery and the amount of wasted DPS that occurs as a result.

I started out with a minmatar bent, promising not to ever fly the awful drake or any of those boring caldari ships. A few weeks in w-space saw me quietly training to fly the drake, and since then the tengu and rattlesnake. They are all fantastic ships for most stable, reliable PvE efforts ... but not so good for incursions and more on-edge PvE.

The main difference I found, between mediocre snake and good snake, was skills trained. Both BS skills to 5, and high training for both drone and missile (T2 all round) skills as well as all support skills made quite a big difference.

Incursions have a pretty high risk-factor build in them from scratch not to mention griefers/gankers and other people who are out to hurt you.
The community itself even allows you to step into lowsec/nullsec PVP where you can fly with pilots who you do incursions with daily. We've even advanced ourselves into doing regular lowsec incursion operations for those who would like the excitement and fun of both PVP and PVE at the same plate.

Heck, saying incursion runners are carebears couldn't be a bigger lie. Most of us come to earn ISK (security status) to do PVP.
I'll let our official killboard speak for itself Linkage.

So yeah, missiles, not really wanted for the more elitist and efficient fleets.
They are very welcome in assaults/headquarter fleets cause they can be reliable snipers and anchors for the fleet. However these fleet tend to be a bit less on the isk-factor, but a bit higher on the fun-factor if you can sustain the waiting time.

I'd say, train your laser skills up and get into a nightmare. It's a ship you will never regret setting foot into. Wink

Take your scan ship into a C2, scan down a C3, grab your tengu and voila!
Of course you'll need a salvager alt but srsly the Tengu can fit some CRAZY gank+tank so yes, there is still hope.

If you want to run incursions with a missile boat run them with your corp or alliance. Would be nice is CCP added special "incursion" missiles that greatly reduce flight time but greatly increased speed. Not sure if somthing like that could be done and what impact it would have on the servers but faster missiles would be awesome. tis a sci-fi game after all.
