The basic idea is for every item to have a security rating, and for it to be impossible/difficult/risky to put items on the market in systems with security level higher than that. For example, selling a security 0.4 item in hisec would be a problem, or selling a 0.8 sec item in a 1.0 sec system.

At the simplest level this could be implemented as an outright restriction, but it might be better to give it a PvP element: you can put any item on the market anywhere (possibly after a warning), but other players can then "tag" orders if they are illegal in that system. After a delay (based on the difference between the item sec level and the system sec level) the tagged orders will be revoked and the items confiscated and destroyed.

Most pirate faction ships and items would have sec rating of 0.4 or less, forcing sale of those items into lowsec. Boosters would be restricted to lowsec, as would "criminal connections" skillbook, etc. Maybe force some manufacturing materials into lowsec as well? Other stuff could be given a sec rating of 0.8 meaning it is OK in most of hisec, but not Jita.

The restrictions could possibly be extended to contracts and the trade window, though this would need more consideration.

No. The New Eden Galaxy is a free market. The Gallente Federation does not suscribe to communism or socialism.

That's it? No other feedback?

More reason to enter lowsec, less "Jita effect", more non-combat PvP gameplay.

I didn't expect universal acclaim, but I was hoping for more than "meh".

interesting idea lan

having a tag system that players can use seems like it could be exploited heavily. if it was simply a matter of drugs cannot be posted on a market in a .7 or higher (same with pirate ships) that might work

How would you exploit it?

Don't really see the point. You're just creating an additional time sink that has to be negotiated before players can get back to the tasks they enjoy. The reason there is the Jita effect is because its convenient. No one wants to have to go jumping around getting modules to put a ship back together when they don't have to. Only thing your idea would accomplish is the establishment of a major trade hub in a 0.5 with a neighboring 0.4.

the tagging could be used to cripple another persons retail market deliberately.

other poster, your probably right about a .5 near a .4

a much more rigid set of parameters could be set. .1's only?

That is PvP, not exploit, though it could potentially cross the line into griefing I suppose. Still, if you don't want people tagging your orders, don't put losec items on sale in hisec markets. Working as intended.

What's wrong with a trade hub on a .5/.4 border? Sounds like a good thing to me. Better than "everything is on sale in Jita", anyway. Besides, many items would be 0.3 or lower.

Regarding the time-sink factor, you need time sinks to put some "real" value on the toys you risk in PvP, etc. Following that argument we should just re-spawn lost ships instantly so you can get right back into the fight.
