Im not sure if its ever come up within the community but doesnt it seem like a great idea to
have an option to logout and go to the character selection screen
instead of the account login screen?

Yes it does!
But I'm sure there is gonna be some complex convoluted reason why this is not possible..... buggered if I know why...

I was thinking the same thing when I first started to play EVE.
Now I'm just so used to it and haven't given it a thought until I saw this thread.

I agree, it would save a few minutes if we got straight to the choose character screen,
instead of having to login again.

Tried to think of "pros and cons" and the only thing I could think of right now that's good with it the way it is;

If you are playing at someone elses house or have people at home, and want to keep your alts secret.. =/

Edit: The obvious solution hit me after I posted. lol
Why not make it so we can choose in settings how we want it to work?
And to make that change take effect you would have to relog. hm

a long long long time ago you used to be able to do it ,,,
but only twice , the 3rd time would cause a cache corruption..
they removed it
as it's easier to fix the broken bits by a complete restart [see windows getting confused]

Its pretty much a wide spread thing in other MMO games. Im sure theres some technical reason related to the whole game being on only one shard.

Im sure if they tried to implement it again it would work fine.

Was requested in CSM 3.

Answer from CCP is that the required clean-up of the already loaded data to make sure there's no memory leaking is more work than the slight inconvenience of having to log off the way it currently does. I'll enquire to see if that's still the case.

Even though it's a slight inconvenience, i'm sure most if not all customers would embrace the change since it affects everyone in some form.

If you think of it, most people have multiple accounts using multiple toons per account, even though people got used to the restart of the client, the change would be very noticeable for all.

Have an extra "swap character" button in addition to the "logoff" button

I absolutely agree that this would be a most welcome addition. Like everything else it's a question of resource allocation.

If they had to put 3 programmers for 6 months [not real figures] on it to clean up the memory deallocation and whatnot, those 3 programmers not available for the other things, fixing other bugs or implementing new features.

As such it's not a question of the value of that feature, it's the question of the value of all the other things that could be done with those same people in that same time.

Those are sometimes difficult things to evaluate, but after we were given an explanation of how/why/etc., short of transcribing the 30 minutes conversation that happened around it word for word, it comes down to "CCP explained to the CSM 3 why it was hard, CSM 3 agreed that, given the required manpower, this would not be a wise allocation of resources at this time".

Few minutes? I have a low end system by today's standards and it only puts me back about 20 seconds...

i can say as well skilled developer: restarting and cleaning is the best option in 99% of cases. When program is being developed for some long time and have had many developers you can never be sure that you know exactly where "how this ****ing variable is being used". Some time you need to completely refactor whole module to fix some bugs or add new functions. Not because refactoring is really needed but because noone really understands what is happening inside Laughing
