Ive just started playing eve and am amazed at the pvp this game has....I would say the best of any other game ive EVER played! As a new pilot im looking into being a GREAT FC, hoping to be one of the best ever out...lolz. Can some one please explain what these different fleets are and and the advantages and disadvantages of each type of fleet? Speaking of one more thing: Is there a difference between a fleet and a gang? Thx for you help pilots!

They are referring to a somewhat general fleet composition when they say "nano fleet."

There are a lot of different fleet comps out there, along with subtle variations depending on size of the fight, alliance/bloc, lowsec vs. null, etc. I don't want to put a wall of text up here, but if you want I can mail you ingame the various different fleet comps I've flown in.

No. Apparently (before my time) they were called gangs in-game instead of fleets and the term stuck i.e. "gang links".

the tl;dr version of history
waaaay back when us bitter vets were young, there was only gangs
without the needed order to get bonuses, highest in group took
to lower server calcs and to allow for gang links, CCP changed things to fleets

I am ofc over simplifying the timeline

I donít think you understand the gravity of how big a wall that wall of txt would be!

take for example a basic drake fleet intercepting another fleet... you would have to have the right number of logistics, ewar, warfare link support, tackle, scouts... then the drake fits themselves would differ... all this can then depend on where you are, where your going, how many of you there are, who your fighting, what theyíre fighting in, how many of them there are! thatís not taking into account possible support fleets (eg bombers) and counter fleets (eg Fire wall), cap supported fleets ect... AND THAT is just one possible fleet concept in one possible engagement.

Oh and i didnít go into detail! when he said wall of txt he meant a series of books with an update every week or so.
Of course that would just be on normal concepts, FC also throw spanners into the works and say weird things like lets run an amour dake fleet for lolz... good luck explaining that one.

Ha you see thats a bit of a wall and it just to describe another Rolling Eyes

It's true, just describing the fleets currently in vogue would take a couple of pages.. alpha fleet with artillery based ships (overwhelmingly maelstroms, but sometimes tempests), Abaddon fleets (hellcats with pulse lasers, artydons with.. arty, beam abaddons for long range), tengufleet (small sig radius, good speed, good punch, but EXPENSIVE).. on and on. The black legion dude can talk about muninnfleet, then AHACS, frigblob, etcetcetc all requiring different support within the fleet, different ranges, different tactics...

Actually, if you don't mind mailing me as well in game. I would like to know some of this and get a better understanding of this game and how that would work. Much appreciated. I am looking into fleet commanding down the road when I get more into the game and start getting more ISK and skills trained up. After I pick an aspect of what I would like to be doing in a fight.

The real key I would give to any aspiring FC is to learn to be patient. Granted, I am a Goon, and we are renowned for being REALLY bad at this game, so our fleets are a bit different.. but the FC always has a bunch of people who don't pay attention, get lost, jump through red gates.. it's an exercise in patience. Once you have that down, and can handle the 50th person in the last hour asking "Where's the fleet at?", then knowing your fleet comps and strengths/weaknesses are good. Like.. never warp your alphafleet to 0 on a hellcat fleet, when flying tengufleet (thundercats) against anyone, KILL THE HUGINNS FIRST, and perhaps most importantly.. a fleet is only as good as its logistics. If you don't have enough, or poor logi skills/pilots, you're likely to take a lot of losses even if everything else is perfect.

And that is my wall-o-text contribution to this thread.

Different fleets have different strengths, that they use to full advantage and build around.

I can list a few and you will get the drift of it.

Armor fleets: All ships tank armor. All reps/Logi is armor based. All ganglinks are armor.

Shield fleets: Same as above. Insert the word "shield" where appropriate.

Nano Fleets: Ships are fitted with additional propulsion mods and rigs. Pilots fly in and out as necessary to stay alive and get the kill.

DPS Fleets:

Frig Fleets:

Gate camp fleet:

Pirate fleet:

Black Ops Fleet:

etc. etc. You get the idea.

My wall of text was so long it won't fit in an evemail.

No trolling. Also: I didn't deliberately lie, but I obviously left out some counters that aren't necessarily well-known for fleet comps I fly. :3

Well written, sir. As you are leaving out the counters to your preferred setup, I'll not expound too much on counters to Alphafleet you missed :) Just suffice to say, no matter what you fly, being able to dictate the range of the engagement will decide the fight.
