Seeing flames coming out of the back of an advanced-tech ship appears a little too retro and more suited for chemical burning from 20th century Earth. Perhaps as a nod to the future normal ship engine's should just glow in different shades of intensity to indicate operation (dull glow for inactivity - intense glow for warping etc) and flames rushing out of the back of a ship/fighter drone etc should instead be reserved to indicate abs being engaged.

Sorry if this has been suggested before but could not see it.

Thanks for reading.

Any engine that works in a vacuum is going to throw hot gas out the back, in some form or another. The only real issue I have with them is that in vacuum you don't get those neat cone shaped exhausts like you do in atmosphere. ORE and minnie drives are the most realistic. The more advanced ones like say, fusion or above really should just be a blinding white glare too, but that would make it a little too hard to see anything.

EDIT: This is basically what Gallente thrust should look like
