Imagination is getting a ship, loading some slaves on it and saying that you bought them off a slave trader to save them.

Imagination is posting threads on the IGS telling why Intaki should be freed and Sansha destroyed.

Imagination is wardeccing some corp because they are supporting people u don't like.

Imagination is NOT saying "I predicted this and planted some mines on the planet... Ur troops will go boom!" Granted, you can do this if it's for example a POS that you have rigged with the other player's OOC agreement, then the other player destructs it. However this is NOT the way to go in incursions.

Pretty much this. It is like little kids going "Oh yeah?!? Well I knew you would invade this planet randomly so I set down sekrit Sansha seeking robots that can't be harmed and stuffs!

If you really want to act like you are doing something regarding the ground battle you should hire some Dust mercenaries to go into the battle. It makes sense from a RP stand point and doesn't require breaking lore.

As a long-time Roleplayer in one of EVE's more prominant (at least in the past) Roleplay Alliances, I agree with the OP.

Try to limit your Roleplay to what you can actually do in-game, and who you actually are in-game.

Honestly, it's been one of biggest RP-based beefs within CVA. CVA has always been a clearly independant 0.0 Nation, but rather than roleplay that, they always stuck to "Amarr Loyalists working for Amarr with like, Amarr contacts and stuff".

CVA should have been a player-run Khanid Kingdom, firendly to Amarr in Politics/Policy, but clearly independant. Would have saved a lot of problems and issues all down the line tbh, and been far more accurate as to the truth of the situation, and freed CVA from the poor planning and randomness of CCP Prime Fiction.

+1 on OP.

Thankfully, dreadful RP is not as present in the non-incursion RP scene. For example, my ships are "bought from Certified Slave-Free™ manufacturers", even the ones based on Amarr blueprints; or, when Amarr RPers kill a POS of ours, they can claim they put all Minmatar to the sword or the chain.

However my Rifter does not have, and it definitely makes no sense for it to have, troop transport shuttles in it for deploying ground strikes, or infiltrations into enemy stations. It doesn't even have a drone-bay, how the hell does it have a storage bay large enough to store and launch an assembled ship?

If you want to claim that you deployed troops from your battleship to stabilize the situation on a planet during an Incursion, fine, but you better be on scene a few hours before the wormhole even opens up, because troop maneuvers are really slow. Or, if you want to rescue the people on the planet, show up in a hauler! The Sansha show up in haulers to take them away, too.

Yelling "LIGHTNING BOLT!" is fine... if you can within a reasonable suspension of disbelief have that power. If you don't, you'll just look like a self-centered idiot who can't come to terms with his own limitations, and is trying too hard to make everything be about him.

Fast forward to this last fanfest. The devs actually read those threads and decided to start implementing the 'extra made up crap' into the game. Would have never made it into the game if people didn't represent it first.

Are you posting this stuff as a gag or a challenge to Tom G?

Talking about your "crew" or laack there of wastes players time but makes RP sense and has no bearing on a battle.

Talking about weapon systems you dont have - claiming things happened in the fight that obviously didnt, - mentioning tactical abilities that are impossible in game just makes you an ass and an attention w-ore

Although after reading this thread if I saw you do it I would jut assume you were dumb and confused yourself.

So, do you trust the Devs to ignore the ****tards and implement the "cool" stuff or do you think that because some jackass said he had ground troops in an Incursion they are going to implement that into the game?

Censorship is for that WWII group we dont talk about.

Critiquing someone else's roleplaying is like arguing with the wind for blowing the wrong direction. The wind can't hear you and doesn't care what your opinion is and you look like an idiot for thinking it does.

There is no right and wrong way to roleplay. Anyone who thinks there is has completely missed the point.

Cipher, I get where you are coming from in this... I really do.

But if you are trying to watch a film in a theatre, is it censorship to ask the guy cracking bad jokes from the back row to pipe down?

No, not so much.

Part of the issue is that people view the term "Role Playing" differently.

Old school types are the old AD&D crowd, that are used to having a framework to base your RP efforts in. They tend to try and do clever, imaginative things within that framework. This applies to any setting where RP activities happen, from settings revolving round the tech and societies in the StarTrek/StarWars universes to Tolkien.

The other type of Role Player is typically the younger, Manga oriented crowd. They tend to RP with each other in a much looser, less structured way. Basically they make up whatever sounds cool that they think their persona would say, without being overly concerned if their actions/abilities match up with what that "type" of character would be able to do.

It's a different way to RP, so I won't cast any more stones at the latter group.

However, I will say that old school RP is a much, much better fit for the EVE universe for many reasons. Not the least of which is that the player base tends to be more used to the old school approach simply due to their average age.

Again, RP nerds in general... and SciFi RP nerds in particular... at best are going to pretty much ignore people that try to RP in an event by referring to things that don't exist in EVE lore. At worst they'll just send you back to your cloning chamber to keep you from (in their view) disrupting the event.

So yes, people should feel free to do as they wish. They just shouldn't be surprised if no body else plays along.

Think on this ...Perception is reality. Reality is comprised entirely of perceptions.

You need the maturity to understand that what you think is real is not how others perceive it, as it has been proved that the brain can be tricked into experiencing things that cannot be and everyone's brain could be wired differently.

General role playing pet peeve of mine:

No one in the history of warfare has said "Die you ____ thugs! For the glory of the _____"

Ever. Except for people pretending to be in warfare, in RPGs.

When I was in Iraq, not once did anyone stand on top their humvee and start screaming about the glory of Constitutional republican federal democracy, or how the locals were scum or some such. Does not happen.

Role playing is like acting. Hell, it is acting. Think of what it's like to be your character. Not your character's bio, the actual character. Are you tired? Are you hungry? Are you lonely? Which of your friends is kind of ****ing you off? Sure, you may have some high falutin' opinions on politics, but why are you actually doing what you do? Isn't a part of it just inertia? And in the time between when you signed up for THE EMPIRE or whatever, and now, how has your thinking changed?

Act your character like a person, not as a series of overwrought cliches.

Uh, no. The fiction has been explicit all the way through that the ships had crews. Ship crew numbers used to be on the database. Fiction got quiet on the matter for a few years, and then probably in response to all the players making things up and then asking which made up thing is right, the devs stated anew (with charts!) that the ships had crews.

The only real point of disagreement on those who had followed the fiction is just how many crew were on each class of ship.

http://www.eve-search.com/thread/1351966/page/1

But oh gee, I guess I'm not posting correctly, because you choose to believe that despite all the fiction ships may or may not have had crews until recently, and who am I to stop you? Also, your megathron holds 10000 elite spacey SEAL ground troops. And and and you are the TRUE heir of the Amarr throne! And you're only 16, and pilot a mecha to high school! It's true because you say so! Nya nya nya!

<coughs>

Fanatics. They do it. Megalomaniacs too... Mind you, they don't last long AFTER doing it, but these are the same kinds of mental defects that strap bombs to themselves and think it's a good idea...

As a Role-Playing game GM for... Way too many years, actually, I have the following to say:

All role playing boils down to Cowboys and Indians. RPG systems add a layer of rules onto that to deal with conflicts between characters (Both player nad GM controlled). These rules define what you can do and what you can't do.

Since eve is the medium for role play, that means, when playing with other players, you cannot role play doing any game mechanic the game does not handle, unless you have "House Rules" That all relevant players agree too. That means no superweapons unless you actually have one, UNLESS all players in the event agree you have one for the scenario.

Role play is fine, have fun with it! Just remember that role playing that you have a bigger gun than your ship really has, to people who are not playing in the same scenario as you, leads to you getting your tail kicked and curb stomped. Try it in low-sec/null-sec and tell me how it turns out.

I must admit I find this hilarious...

This is EVE.. you are allowed to do everything beside scamming for real life currency pretty much.. and yet some one felt the need to come and say "It irritate me how you use your imagination in game!!! if you want to use it.. use it like I tell you to"

For ****s sake... people are free to do what ever they want.. you can disagree with them all you want, because you are free to do that in the sandbox.. but telling people how to RP or not in EVE is the same as a miner/industrialist telling a pirate that he or she cant gank them because its not right...

Come on...

From a RP point of view, when people start talking about things that obviously do not exist, just treat them like the lunatics they are. Power got to their head you know, it happens to the best of the capsuleers.

FWIU some idiot self-destructed a freighter near a wh and some idiot dev sperged all over him for it and incorporated it in the story.

As long as devs reward idiots like that, it's hard to say where to draw the line. I'm surprised the monocolords weren't there using their monocoles as mind-control devices on the sanshtards.

EVE is a PVP+market sandbox game. The 'prime fiction' is horribly written, inconsistent, immersion-shattering rubbish. If you want to RP well, you're playing the wrong game.

Embarrasements like this make for epic comedy threads.

Why are RPers such a joy to see butthurt anyway... Bottom feeders?

Ever heard of that maurdering or whatever it's called? Where you dress up and act out RPing. A few kids in High school got royally screwed socially when people caught them acting out at a park. Those kids carried that baggage for over 3 years, was a shame but at the same time terribly funny. They got what was coming frankly.

Totally agree that RP should be within the lore of a game world. Obviously people can make mistakes, but they should at least make some effort to have their RP lore-appropriate.

Generally, working within the limits of a form fosters creativity more than formlessness. Formless creation (e.g. free jazz, improv, martial arts, etc.) is actually the last thing an artist learns, after they've developed some skill creating within rules.

Why is it the last thing? Because it's the most difficult thing to do without making some godawful splurgy mess.

You might call any old imaginary stream of consciousness RP. Well, it's a possible thing to do, but it's not RP as that's classically understood. RP, classic RP, is where all the people participating are creating a story TOGETHER.

Like musicians jamming. Everyone is listening to everyone else, trying to catch the thread, the logic, of a story that they're making together, and stepping up when the spirit takes them, to contribute to the story. THAT'S RP.

Or at least, it's an exceptionally rewarding "thing" you can do that's classically been called "roleplaying". (It's fully as adrenaline-pumping as PvP.)

The OP is directly telling them not to do as they wish. I'm not even playing along. I played and DM'd AD&D 1st and 2nd edition. However, there is a world of difference between Waterdeep and Jita. There are thousands of players in Jita and what comes out of their mouths means exactly **** all and cant dynamically affect the NPC's. In waterdeep you better not even let an NPC hear you talking crazy. You will be made to suffer. The biggest issue however is simply this, in EvE, if someone isn't in your party (fleet), you can just completely ignore them and their rhetoric. No matter what YOU say to or about the NPC's has NO EFFECT on the game whatsoever.

That's not what the Devs said at fanfest. They said they read the threads in the forums and thought that what a lot of the people said made sense and they wanted to implement it in the game. Does my ship have a crew? Lore says it does; so it does - they are simply imaginary. Oh wait, that's what RP is.

You have a good point here. And the devs have, for whatever reason, played along with this kind of powergaming. I agree generally with the OP that they shouldn't, and I think that because it steps on the toes of other roleplayers. If I've tried to make this elaborate persona within game mechanics, and some guy "god mode's" it, my gameplay has been cheapened. But, it's their game.

unrelated: in EVE, everyone is roleplaying, no matter how hard they try not to, because it all comes down to intercapsuleer interactions. If you sell on the market, you are a marketer. If you engage in piracy, you are a pirate. There's no way around that. The sandbox nature of EVE makes everyone at least sort of a roleplayer. A lot of goons like to go "LOLrp," but they run an actual in-game intelligence agency. That is some amazing role play right there. I'm not even being sarcastic - it's amazing, and it's one of the things that made me start playing this game.

I'd like to add 2 points.

1. If, in character, you attempt to express your superiority over me (Die, heathen scum! etc) SPELL CORRECTLY. Nothing ruins an attempt at RP like internet spelling.

2. Don't. Break. Character.
