What would you use to equip these two ships?

I would equip:

High:
Medium Modulated, 2 Dual 150 Scouts, Micro Pulse weapon if they can handle it

Med:
Small Clarity Booster, LIF Afterburner

Low: Stamped Heat Sink, Weapon Stabilizer Mount, probably need a CPU and possibly a PG Boost Module

Actually, I wouldn't recommend using anything but hybrid turrets for the Merlin. All of your ship specfic bonuses apply to them only. Also, the Caldari ships excell with shield ops...so use that to your advatange with skills, modules etc. IMHO, afterburners and other speed modifiers are a waste of time in anything but Minmatar ships. Stay away from them...treat yourself to a nice shield boost. In my Merlinm with the appropriate skills, I can have 623 Shield HP. That's almost triple a normal frigate's rating.

For the Merlin:

High: 2 150mm Rail guns - Thorium or Iridium Charges

Med: 1 Small or Micro Shield Extender

Low: 2 Power Diagnostic Systems

If I may ask.. why are speed improvments useless for all but minmitar ships?

Also is there anywhere on the net that lists all the different guns and shields and whatnot?

It seems that most of the people playing played through beta and know quite a bit about all the little details...

But for someone like me, i don't know the difference between a railgun and a mining laser (well, only slightly:))

To answer the question about speed:

To make a difference in combat, you need to be going 500 m/s or better if you hope to use your speed as a defensive capability. The minmatar ships have nice bonuses to ship speed, which coupled with navigation skill ranks and afterburners, make a huge difference. A corp mate of mine can get a rifter to 1 km/s second with nav level 5, 3 AB's, and the speed boost from his ship's skill bonuses.

There is no way as a Caldari that I could keep up with him. Thus, I chose to beef up my shield, and compliment the strengths of my race instead.

My Merlin is equiped as follows:

High: 1 s gatling pusle laser, 1 light ion blaster.
2x Limos missile lauchers 1 with flameburst missile and 1 with piranha missiles.

Med:1 shield extender, 1 shield booster and an AB1

Low: 1 basic cargo expander and thermic plating or sim

For the Punisher, wouldn't it make more sense to use lasers only, since all the ship bonuses go towards that?

Also, do smart bombs use a turret slot, a missile slot, or neither of the above?
