Fascinating topic, or issue - Local visa vis military ops. "Never give away your position." It's the first, cardinal rule of the battlefield. What's the second? "Know the strength and disposition of your enemy."

Untold fortunes have been spent over centuries to solve these two problems. It's what "intelligence" is all about. If these two factors aren't in your fighting considerations, you're a child clomping around in daddy's shoes playing grown up. The local chat channel makes it an absurdity.

"You can't fight 'em if you can't see 'em." This complaint from the U.S. Army was particularly significant with the Apache war, and Vietnam - spanning a century. The U.S. even resorted to using Agent Orange to burn away the jungle just so they could see the enemy.

Radar was developed by the British in WWII for early warning, and force construction information to defeat their opposition (censor avoidance) in the Battle of Britain. This line of tech has led directly to the use of drones, satellite imagery and internet computer linkage to create the basis of Modern Warfare.

Here we are, in a tech universe advanced light years beyond what it is today, and all that is dashed by the existence of the Local chat channel. Not only that. You can use the Star Map to determine how many pilots are active in a system, how many are docked, how many ships have been destroyed in two different time frames, how many jumps have been made through particular gates, and even if a cyno field is active in a system.

Okay, the latter information it is conceivable could be available to a military using fictitious, yet plausible means. However, comm traffic between people within a system can be encrypted (as easily decrypted), but it must be intercepted. Wouldn't it be nice to receive a roster of all military personnel within reach of the army you just crossed over a border?

Look at the strategies EVE players have devised using these means. Appearing in local, how much time it takes to a. to z. Log-on/log-off strategies. In fact, very little is required in warfare in EVE to manage this very difficult (normally) problem of gathering accurate intelligence.

More times than not, NOT knowing the strength and disposition of your enemy, its force composition being a cherry on top, has prevented military action. The term "actionable intelligence" is more than a James Bondish, cool guy phrase.

It's easy to see the inventors of this game know a lot about playing, and computers. It's painfully obvious, and woefully short-sighted that their expertise from the outset didn't include knowledge of military doctrine and how governments actually function.

These are "played around". But, stricter adherence to their true natures, much as is accomplished with the market part of the game, would alter considerably the ability of Alliances to run rampant, seize and hold obscene amounts of the map. BoB, for instance, might never have been if they had to actually fight wars, instead of fight EVE wars...war as imagined by those who know little (apparently) about how it's actually done.

These factors, true military doctrine, intelligence and sovereign authority, if adhered to, would present real challenges. The king of that hill would really be somebody.

You should be sitting on daddy's lap while he reads the comics to you, then. If it's more text than your attention span can handle, apart from getting some Ritalin, you might ought to just click out and find something small enough for your intellect to get itself around.

It is better to be silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

That was my thought...

Entire wall of text = he does not like the current state of local.

Worthless post, doesn't explain exactly what is wrong with it.

I'm beyond the point of fearing for humanity, so I won't go that route.

Good, thoughtful post, OP (and with plenty of spaces in the "wall").
