CCP then introduced the Unified Service Layer (USL), a new construct building upon the API to allow a web-interface with Eve; effectively the API on steroids. The USL would be capable of allowing end users to buy items from the Eve market without logging in, and a variety of other similar things. If all goes well, CCP hopes to be able deploy the USL soon. This fed into a very brief discussion on third party monetization.

USL will probably be limited to in-house projects such as Gate, I doubt this will be accessible for external devs. I'd happily pay $99 to get access to that API, hell i'd pay $200.

Seriously? Have you considered what an unmitigated mess CCP has made of api changes? $200 a year for someone at CCP to mention in passing a couple days prior to a major release "oh yeah we took that out...."?

You sir have far too much money on your hands. Therefore I am contemplating invoicing you for my comment.

Easy market bots, here they come! Twisted Evil

Whoever came up with that idea should seriously rethink this one.

Skill changes from oog are cool, but anything that affects other players should be left read only.

Yep, changing things is a sensitive topic, but I think updating the skill queue, sending mails to corp members and mark received mails and notifications as read could work.

sending money, accepting and/or creating? contracts, CRUD contacts, delivering industry jobs, ...

What I, too, don't want to see is a way to buy/sell on market or setting up/changing market orders.

This is a tough one. Yes, we desperately need a more functional API. Standings, mail, wallet transactions, they're are all available. Corp History is a nice to have ( and can be sc****d if you really need it) and should obviously be in a re-vamped API. Eve-O forum searching ?

We've asked for an out of game skill changing function for years, but we all know that it's bordering on the limits of what should or should not be allowed through the API. Bots to train characters while we go on holiday to the Black Sea anyone? ( I love Varna in summer Wink )

But placing Market Transactions? Placing Build Jobs? There's in-game profit to be made there and that means bots. And that means this is a really BAD thing.

here's hoping to a proper dev blog soon(tm)

I like Hel O'Weens approach: Allow only changes that affect a players own character. No other player may be affected.

OK: Change skill queue, mark mails and notifications as read or delete them, deliver industry jobs, manage contacts, ...

DONT: Send mails, buy and sell stuff - both in market and via contracts, send notifications when changing contacts, ...

Difficult to decide: accept private contracts, cancel contracts or market orders.

Why don't you want to send mails through the API?

It's already possible via EVE Gate and 'in theory' you could write an application which operates through EVE Gate Wink

I already get a lot of mails with "self-confidence" enlargment pills and invites from strange women in real emails. Don't need that in eve.

Yeah don't need any more spam then already have in Eve and don't want it to become like outside E-Mail accounts with a couple dozen a day Razz

Lutz Major

I dont' think that spam would be a problem.
In RL, where everybody could setup a mail server and send thousands of mails, EVE is run by one company and they know excactly which account(s) a spammer has.

I know that 'throw away' accounts are easily created, but the mechanism to lock sending mails through the USL for trial accounts wouldn't be a problem. Would it?

Anyway, spamming through EVE Gate / game client is possible already, but nobody really does it (except for some few CSM mails - I haven't gotten any 'spam' yet).

a way to send evemail from a character,
or to transfer isk would allow so much
better integrated and userfriendly applications.

the problem is the security of that, but lets see
what ccp comes up with before everyone starts
*****ing on the forums again.

I know its uncommon to comment on anything by CCP devs, but nothing at all for the upcoming USL?

I mean this is the biggest expansion for the api and not even a dev blog comming soon?

Agree with all this. I don't have a problem with switching skill training, and that would be an awesome feature to have within apps like evemon. I don't care if it's "botted". As someone who works for a living, it's irritating to have to constantly shuffle skills around so there isn't a gap in coverage if I can't actually play for a week, or a month.

Research and manufacturing would be OK.

No buying or selling though, this would destroy the market in days.

i agree on the skill queue things. but you know what the easiest way to fix that is? make the skill queue longer than 24 hours. no API or external applications needed.
as for delivering industry jobs: well, then the stuff is in your hangar till you log in to do sth with it. what have you gained? aka: not worth it imho. if you also add ways to transfer goods from and to a character and potentially start industry jobs, you can bot industry toons entirely. i much rather finally get a way to switch chars on account without having to restart client + log back in again which has been a industry standard since diablo 1 came out. less risk of botting + long needed functionality.

If I could create a private contract afterwards, very much!

For example: I could let haul Red Frog the stuff from my production system to a hub and then contract it to my bulk reseller.

Personally, all I want to see is a way to transfer isk, preferably both personal and corp isk.

Everything else is just gravy.

No, never YARRRR!!
I dont mind if I have to use my username and pwd for this, I dont require access to other people's isk (and therfore credentials).
If you're talking about laundering, that only requires a few more checks and balances to be placed on handling the isk.
If you're NOT talking about laundering, I don't know what you mean.

But the API *DOESNT* take your username and password for a number of very good reasons. (Want to transmit your un-encrypted username and password to a third party site? want someone to make repeated calls to the API trying to log in and steal your ISK perhaps?)

And since many, if not most serious corps, will insist on a Full API key for security at least during your application, there's plenty of people out there with your full API key if you didn't change it recently ... You really think they should be able to take from your wallet?

I think you're missing some points here.

1. We're talking about the Unified Services Layer which is being earmarked as providing a portal to in-game transactions and contracts. A direct isk exchange is not out of the question. (Frankly, it should already be an action available in the IGB, but that's another rant)

2. Given that we're talking about the USL, there will need to be some form of enhanced security, be it vCodes, OAuth or whatever.

3. I don't need to share any of my code or binaries for the application I'm writing to be useful for the masses.
I dont even need the masses to supply their bank details either.

I'm simply stating that I want a way to directly transfer isk in the new USL. It can be exploited as much as the next feature.

Also, I think you missed the announcement about the Customizable API key update.
