I have about 7 million sp in gunnery to something like 2-3 in missiles most of which is cruise missiles. I have built a missile tengu in eve fit tool and rail one just works better for me i can shoot things with it about 126km easily and hit frigs while with missiles my dmg and range seem much worse. So why such hate for rails? I realise they arent as good as missiles but nothing is.

P.S i already have a missile fit drake so why bother making drake mkII out of tengu?

just because your missile skills suck doesnt mean the tengu is not an awful rail platform and even more rails are not gimped.

for the tengu especially the rail module lacks a few things:

with rails, no dronebay means one frig under your guns can be your doom because you never can track it. it naturally suffers from the rail lolness at its current state which is covered in many other threads.

blasters just dont have enough range, and the tengu is not as fast as say a proteus with mwd. please compare a leguin with pulse lasers / scorch to a tengu with blasters / null. then you will see why its bad

This is total rubbish, any tengu fit is faster than a armor proteus.

Rails could work on a tengu but as Antares said any firg gets under those guns you are going to have to rely on your buddys and your tank.

I'm not supprised you get "better damage" with the rails at range on frigs vs missiles, the missiles will be subject to a flat sig radius where as the rails while having a target signature attribute like missiles it is adjusted by tracking not speed. Thus with low enough tracking on a target, you get full damage hits on frigs where even under the best circumstances the missile will only be able to apply so much of its payload potential.

A better comparason would be to use a target painter or two witht he missiles and compare THAT to rails at range.

Ive been looking around and i think i answered my own question, the tengu with missiles can have double the tank strength that the cap with rails doesnt allow you. Oh well guess its time to train more missile skills.

really? well i must admit i do not own a proteus, only a tengu and a legion from tech3. so just eft here. with the localized injectors and a 10mn mwd II the proteus is way faster than the mwd IIed tengu with any propulsion submod (theres one that bonuses ab, but not mwd btw)

Let me help you by pointing some facts that will help you understand the thinking of the above poster who said that tengu is way faster than armor proteus.

any sane tengu pilot would fit 100mn AB instead of 10mn MWD for known reasons.

so please stop thinking about a tengu with 10mn mwd fitted :) is just wrong

If your goal for missions is isk/time, then you use whatever you need to maximize that. I, for one, hate doing missions. Back when I used to run them for my isk I always went for the most efficient way to do it. Less time wasted in PVE is a good thing.

Low DPS, poor tracking, fixed damage types, and dubious T2 ammo makes rails pretty underwhelming.

If you can't make an HML Tengu perform better than a Rail Tengu, then your missile skills are lacking, or you're doing something seriously wrong.

DPS. A passive Drake with 2xBCUs can manage 413 DPS to 75km + drones. A max-gank, active tanked Drake can put out 523 DPS out to 75km + drones. A max-gank Tengu can put out 712 DPS out to 100+km.

Plus a Tengu is faster, more agile, can be easily made cap-stable with an AB, is great for blitzing, and can run any level 4.

The same reason why someone would move from a caracal to a drake. Better overall performances.

Hep there!

Any sane pilot writing what you did would also say it's an faction fit with HAM's to be able to fit the 100MN AB?
Because with perfect skills (all lvl5) you can, without those perfect you just can't witch means you fly stuff above 2B fit /bravo

You're talking about speed here, not dmg application or pvp vs pve use.
Now to PVP in T2 fit you just can't have the 100MN AB tengu or you'll get a lol fit.

If the rail Tengu just works better for you, then you did it all wrong.

Rail Tengu = fail Tengu.

You can fit a Tengu out like a Drake, and it's marginally better. You can also go with a ganky fit that melts L4 missions. You can't do that with a Drake.
