Hey guys, I'm a returning player who's been away since a little after PI was introduced. I'm trying to learn the optimal way to set up my PI again. I understand you can set up multiple heads on one extractor now, so should I only build one extractor and then max the heads to my power? Or do you still build multiple extractors? Is it wise to do multiple resource types on the same planet?

You can mine more then one thing on a planet BUT it takes up so much of your available powergrid it isnt all that wise. better put down several heads and if need be switch back and fourth. (that way you deplete them less too)

The extractor control unit (ECU) takes 2100 powergrid. And of itself does nothing. So the more ECUs, the more wasted powergrid. I would say the "best" way is to extract one P0 resource on a single planet and transform it to P1 there. you might want to extract 2 resources and make P2 on a planet, but it's less effective (at least 2 ECUs, lots of powergrid for links), althou requires less hauling. It's all about reward/effort

You can also start with p1 materials off the market and manufacture until you are skilled up...

What is the ideal length of time to run extractors for? Right now I've got them on a 20 hour cycle. Also how many storage warehouses do you set up next to the extractor? I've been finding that I need like 3+ links to carry all the product from the extractor. Should I place the manufacturing plants next to it instead and send off 3k to each for their cycle and the excess to a warehouse?

Absolutely EVERYTHING you are asking about is in these links found in a 5 second Google search:

THEN ask a flood of questions afterwards if need be.

You're Welcome.

Edit: TBH, we ALL found out by trial and error for the most part.

Also, if you did PI before, plan on pulling only around 1/2 volume of material pulled under the original system.

It's not really worth doing PI for descent income unless you are comfortable doing PI pickups in a Cloaky Transport in .2 and .1 systems.

High Sec PI is really low production and not exactly a money-maker any longer.

Just so ya' know...

Thanks for the advice, however those links are outdated with the old PI (before extractor heads). The problem I'm having is that my extractor with all the heads turned on sucks up more material than 1 link can carry. So now I've got 3 warehouses between my extractor and my processors with a link each. Problem is, it's terribly messy for links trying to hook all three storage warehouses to 4 processor plants.

So my question is: Would placing the 4 processors next to the extractor and sending 3k to each via link and then the rest to a warehouse create any waste? Obviously if you hook an extractor right to a processor, it wastes any material it produces before the processor is ready to intake again, but would having a secondary link to a warehouse save this wasted material?

Oh never mind! I just realized you can upgrade links so they can carry more material. Haha! Thanks every one for the advice!

The profitability of PI and cycle time as discused earlier depends on how much time you want to invest. There is no "ideal" PI setup. The less time you want to invest, the better the isk/hour ratio, but isk/month suffers. Or the other way around, but you can't really "PI" for 8 hours a day.
Personaly, I do PI in npc 0.0, with lvl 4 skills on 3 characters. one full ECU and 8 basic factories on 4 planets, making P2 on the fifth (mainly to ease the logistic costs getting everything to empire), I reset most often once a day and this gets me a little bit under 900M (including logistic costs, import/export taxes and the occasional moving of buildings) per month, while investing about 11 hours of time into it. Not a bad 80m/hour when the characters have only about 1M SP each.

What are you making? and how many of it are you making an hour?
