It is pretty obvious that CCP has overextended itself, funding three development cycles on one active game. The development of EVE itself has been slashed to focus on Dust514 and WoD, alienating the playerbase supporting the entire house of cards. Such a situation is untenable at best. The solution is painful... but necessary.

Dust514 needs to be cancelled and its assets moved to EVE and WoD production. Despite what you may thinking about the noble experiment of tying Dust514 and EVE together, the fact of the matter is that FPS/action games just don't have the lifespan to recoup the money they are expecting from microtransactions. Unless the game is called Battlefield or Call of Duty, a FPS will die rather quickly, and even they are killed off by their successors yearly. CCP seems to be banking on the one-in-a-million shot that they make the next Team Fortress II (which suffered on the consoles btw) Dust514 may provide a quick infusion, but CCP's entire business model for the game seems to revolve around milking those players for microtransactions, which won't occur, especially in the fickle console markets, since players will abandon it as soon as something new comes out.

One of games needs to die, and long-term WoD seems to be more likely to be profitable, with or without MT, due to its built-in fanbase. Even the 800-pound gorilla Blizzard with their billions in revenue, cancelled Starcraft Ghost because they recognized this aspect of action games, coupled with the end of the Xbox/PS2/GC platform lifespan. Yet, CCP is attempting the exact same thing at the trailing edge of the PS3 life-span. Dust514 doesn't even have the advantage of attracting the entire EVE fanbase since people who like "spreadsheets and spaceships" might not necessarily by amicable to a FPS squad based game.

Hard decisions are required and CCP needs to make a change before it is too late.

Anyone agree?

Agree.
In gaming world CCP is a minor player with experience in developing MMO's. Why on Earth they think they can develop a successful FPS on ageing PS3 is beyond logic. They should keep WoD as ir probably has potential and is something that CCP knows how to do right, Dust has to go. CCP is not EA and can't be everywhere.

I cannot agree. Dust 514 looks very interesting - it's a brave experiment of sorts that may add a new dimension to Eve Online.

Brave experiment that can sink the whole enterprise. If CCP were the size of Sony or EA, no one would care if Dust is a success or faulire. In case of CCP if Dust fails, they are in a big hole.

Doesn't take an Einstein to know that trying to develop 2 major titles on the back of one game you are seriously neglecting isn't going to work. I myself love FPS, and would really like to play Dust514, but I don't want to see EVE die to do it.

Dust514 is okeish, doubt it will do great, but it might.

instead kill of WOD I mean it is not part of the EVE universe so who gives a damn and it is right in a place where the compition is fierce so it is far less likely to succeed than even dust.

For the most part, and FPS is a FPS is a FPS. What you really enjoy is the setting and minor differences in what your doing while your twitch gaming. Even if this doesn't do great, it is a HUGE leap forward in the gaming industry.

ATM, I play CSS for my FPS needs, when this comes out it will be DUST

The OP's point is obvious. Dust has no future;

- next Xbox is already in the making, Sony's semi-failed console needs a successor anyway (on the risk of, again, failing to meet Microsoft on the market's apex).
- what the OP said, the FPS market is murderous en spoken for by CoD and BF. Even Killzone 3's lifespan was like, what, 3 months?

I think I have to trust CCP to be able to run their own company since I know sweet F.A. about it.

For a sense of where Dust 514 might end up 6 months after release, here's a link to a review of another multiplayer only FPS released by a small-time developer.

http://kotaku.com/5525967/lead--gold-review-fools-gold

Note the complaints include
-poor network code
-tiny playerbase

It's currently on sale on Steam for $1.35, down from $9.

If dust sells enough copies to pay for itself, I don't care.

However, if CCP "pulls the plug" that would be a far more stupid idea than actually releasing it at this point.

so... no, they need to continue with the project.

Think back to when CCP first started developing EVE and how investing in a single sharded universe was laughed at and that the logistics behind it was impossible, wouldn't work and that they'd fall on their faces then.

8 years later.

Since I would add PI to the list of horrible failures of CCP in the last years, it makes no sense to use it for a FPS. The thing is a trainwreck and impossible to fix, connecting it with Dust514 will only make the shooters failure certain.

with sony now owing shares in ccp, the probability of dust getting axed is about zero. sadly.

I think the new PS4 will get released in 2012, hope Dust514 can be played on it as well. Otherwise the whole development of it might be not worth the effort.

I'm worried ever since CCP announced Dust will be PS3 only. I only hope they got a lot of money from Sony, because they are missing out on all the Xbox fanboys and lets face it Xbox Live > PSN..

I think the only hope of success is to provide an orange box type deal for PS3 then release a PC version as soon as contractual obligation to Sony ends.

CCP have done well to maintain their near monopoly over the Sci-Fi MMo niche, even though theres not been a great deal of competition. But the console FPS market is a whole different ballgame, I'm not convinced CCP has what it takes to hang with the big dogs.

On the other hand cancelling DUST now would probably trigger a failcascade of the ages for CCP, I dont think anyone want that.. apart from BioWare maybe.

Haven't PS consoles always had backward compatability?

It's too late to cancel Dust, and WoD is both a) too big brand and b) alot more potential (on paper at least) to make profit than EVE or Dust, probably even combined.

What I'm saying is, it's already too late for CCP to cancel anything, they'll have to ride this out.

Dust could actually work if it was released for PCs as there is a niche for a good sci-fi based Battlefied-like game. But PS3? PS3 is for people who jump from game to game, play super casually. And Dust has no additional value over call of duty-like games. What do console players care about the effect of their actions in another game they never heard of? And it's the added value that is supposed to win market for dust. Dust is going to sink even if it happens to be a very good game. Too short lifespan. And without COD or Battlefield brand it is not going to pay for itself on release date.

If I remember correctly some of the newer PS3 are not compatible with PS2, so the same might happen to PS4 -> PS3. See http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3 its in german, but I think theres an english version on wiki too.

The PS3 slim and the 60GB(??) phats aren't backwardly compatible with PS2 because Sony removed the emulator chipset and software although they will play just about any PS One game. Smile

Well put and you have a point but there are exceptions to the FPS short lifespan; Counter Strike and Resistance 2, to name 2, still have plenty of players to create competitive games. Not saying Dust 514 will be as successful but I'd like to give it a go.
