Mork, business is a constant negotiation with a customer base. Perhaps by definition.

Business is about new customers.
Period.

EXPANDING business is about new customers. I'm in a sales business at the moment. About 60% of our customers are RETURN customers. Customers who were happy and came back. Then they told their friends. That's about another 15%. The other 25% is casual business, people who heard about us somehow and came in.

Business is growing steadily, and we keep customers COMING BACK.

If you regularly **** off your repeat customers, who are a steady stream of revenue, then you're ****ed. They're not going to recommend their friends go either. Then suppose that the ****ed off customers go and write reviews based on your service, and they see that you suck for one reason or another. They're going to go somewhere else.

Consider Eve: Who are the majority of customers at Eve? Repeats, right? People who came, saw the game, liked the game, and decided to stay. They tell their friends. They write reviews in other forums. So, when you **** off a very vocal portion of players...

Oh forget it, no matter what rational arguments are presented to you, you're just going to dance around in circles.

Oh, and also, this.

Really, 100 leave and 10 join. Post me some official stats, and we'll discuss, mkay?

And I laugh at all those who think that this will deter new subscribers. Newsflash, micro transactions have been in games for a long time. From $2 DLC for horse armour, to facebook games, to a large number of online games, everyone has seen it, isn't the end of the world, etc. You want a new gun in battlefield heroes? Pay for it. You want more gold in WoW, pay for it. You want to play a bit more of your favourite game? Download that DLC and pay for it? You want new skins on your characters? Pay for it. You what that new map pack? Pay for it.

Nothing new here folks.

Notice that the rest of the world don't care. Notice that this has already been implemented to the rest of the world. If you don't like it, move on, no one is telling you to stay. CCP isn't pointing a gun saying stay.

With CoD being pointed out, look at this. People were laughing and threatening when Activision sold their first map pack for $15. People still bought it. BY THE MILLIONS. Those who left, well, they already got all they could outta you, NEXT!

Awww you sad dim witted simpleton...some concepts are realy, realy tough to grasp right?
EVE has a forced subscription, show me one game with a forced subscription that also uses P2W...any game that is alive and doing well i mean.

Actually the rest of the world do care, go look at any online gamer site...EVE has taken a severe pounding, the one at Massively is particular scathing and is also a bloody good read...maybe if its to tough you can get mommy to help you with the big words...mkay?

Ad hominem attacks? You can't utilize some brain cells to formulate and argument or backup your stats? How pathetic. You claim this, yet you can't provide it.

Forced subscription and P2W? WoW. You can buy gold to do whatever (P2W), and you have forced subscription. Now where's my cookie?

Online gamer site? People actually read those? Really. You stuck in a time flux, like 2001?

If you don't like it, get out. Or do you need to cry to mommy and tell her the big evil CCP company is going to take your stuff away?

Stats? where did i post stats ?
Also its freakin' hilarious you would count WoW, it has 12 million subs and can do what it likes, and it also releases content, EVE hasnt released any real content in years.
EVE has never had, nor will it ever have that many players, it is a niche game...currently s**ting on its player base.
As for gamer sites, yes they are more popular than ever, however seem to be new to the Internet so ill let you away with that one.

Yes it's amusing to mention wow. 12 million players on subscription and they still charge full price for expansions and have a thriving MT store where you can't spend ingame currency.

Must be easy delivering an expansion when you know 12 million people are going to pay $80.

You make a claim that 100 leave, 10 join. Post some stats to back it up. Or do you enjoy making crap out of that non-existent brain of yours?

EVE hasn't released any new content. On that basis, we should be back where EVE was 18 months ago. Is it? Sorry, reality doesn't match up with your 'claims'

Is it currently taking a turd on it's customer base. It's taking a turd on those 5% of haters who hate anything and everything. That's not called taking a turd, it's called life and reality.

Gamer sites. The only one I read is Kotaku. I can't be bother with other sites. And unfortunately for you, I've been on the internet since about 1996. Before it was cool. Online MMORPG sites are redundant.

Sorry, you gotta troll a little harder.

So you're a troll. Outta the bridge.

As for 100 leave, 10 join. You may be illustrating a principle, but on what basis? For every new member, 10 leave. Where is the justification? Hmmm? We enjoying making crap up? Given the publicity (any publicity is good publicity), I would be betting that currently, it is sitting even, although we can only gauge after every months. So gauging by your numbers, during this whole period where 10k people claim to have left, we should have gained 1k in members.

As for robbyx, clearly your parents don't love you, having absolutely nothing nice to say. I find it exceptionally amusing that you hate CCP so much, you hate the game so much, yet you're still here. You know what the big boys call that? Irrationality. According to wikipedia, you are acting without reason, in emotional distress or cognitive deficiency. There, there, it's alright to be irrational..

I've been playing off and on since 2006, and yeah I think he's spot on. It's really not hard to figure out.

Dude, stop posting. You're embarrassing yourself.

The numbers I gave only served to illustrate that the assertion that "business is all about new customers" was not quite true. Try rereading it again, without the 12 year old rager hat on. You'll also note that the OP was plenty smart enough to understand what I was saying.

Once again.... NOT....EVE....NUMBERS....NOT....MEANT....TO....BE....EVEN

PS, never confess to a quick read of the blessed wiki as the limit of your understanding of your own argument.

Sorry, wrong on that count again. I forget who, but someone posted a lifecycle of customers. At a certain critical point, people burn out of playing EVE, and play in a more casual basis. I can't remember where, that's the only issue.

Thus, with that point, we need more acquisition of new customers to offset the decline in older players. Furthermore, older players are generally more wealthy, so they don't necessarily have to pay to play, they can just spend their vast fortune on buying PLEX, which means they don't directly contribute to the golden doubloon stash of CCP.

Secondly, only 5% of the playerbase is revolting. After all, 10k threaten to quit, out of a subscriber base of how many thousands? I use the number of 300k, which is what EVE claimed a while back. I believe it to be higher, but I don't have exactly numbers. Note, with that, it's only 3.33% of the playerbase revolting. We probably have 3.33% of the rest of players buying monocles.

And finally, I pretty darn well know what irrationality means. I could point to behaviour on the forums, but wiki is far more understandable ... I hope. After all, who quits for a reason that isn't even explained yet.

I know this will in all likelihood fall upon deaf ears, but I'll try anyway. Mark, the most valuable resource currently in EVE is time played. Everything in the game is spawned into it as a result of a trade between someone trading their time played for that thing to be spawned. Microtransactions get around this fundamental concept of EVE by effectively making time played infinite, and replacing that part of the trade to spawn things with real life money. Real life money, obviously, is something that is not controlled by forced within the game.

What this essentially means to average players is that the sandbox economy that EVE is most known for will be bypassed by things out of its control, since money will be used to spawn things. In a game like EVE, where the immersive, sandbox gameplay is the main draw, that will be a death blow the foundations upon which EVE was built.
