I'll be setting up a freelancer server shortlyish to satisfy my sci-fi mutliplayer needs.

It's not great but the server cap might be about 100 people, which working together or killing each other or whatever may be pretty fun, particularly with the semi-decent economy. PLUS there's no CCP Very Happy

Battlestar Galactica Online would be a good alternative if it weren't so dependant on RMT.

Doesn't breed confidence but for a pick up anytime free game it is not a bad bit of fun.

Privateer was my favourite space game for a long time, and I still remember it most fondly. Maybe I'll dust of the game disks and give it a go. Very Happy

Too bad the sequel was something of a disappointment though.

Yes, sad pattern. It seems everything just disapears in front of you...

And yes, X3 is a fine sci-fi game for single player. But if you're into PvP you'll miss the e-tears Wink

WTB sandbox and a game where production really matters.

Crafting systems in most MMO is pretty pointless, since items are usually indestructible there and money has a limited value. Anyone knows of a game where economy, diplomacy and the PvP aspects is remotely similar to EVE? Don't give a rats ass if it's in space or not.

On back burner while they attempt to perfect their tech and license it to other game devs.

Perpetuum seems to the consensus as most like what we like about Eve. Don't think there are any space ones (which probably explains why Eve has been around this long).

Perpetuum is nothing like eve, and 30 mins in there will have you want to go back. Fight for eve, havent "we" - as far as there is such a thing- always done that ?

The only vote you have is with your wallet. Can't "fight" while still paying CCP.Laughing

Tachyon: The Fringe (Campaign + Multiplayer, Ten Ships total)
X2: Threat (SandBox single-player)
X3: Reunion(SandBox single-player)
Freelancer (Campaign - Tries to use SandBox, nothing like X-Universe games)

Those are good single-players, although Tachyon IS actually multiplayer hardly anyone plays it anymore or even know what it is. X2 and X3 have slow starts, but very on par with EVE's 'SandBox' in terms of building fleets and be able to fly anything from small fighters to Carriers. Also, they are all joystick compatible.

Freelancer is VERY SIMILAR to Black Prophecy, an action-shooter space MMO that just came into Beta for US and has already been released in Europe. BP is something of a grind for levels, but the PvP is fun and you can kill people multiple levels above you since levels don't affect atrributes, on the skills you choose to gain at each level. I highly recommend trying BP - warning, it will be F2P and does have a premium store. Has a ways to go in terms of content, but it's fun and, well, free is never a bad thing for fun stuff. BP is joystick compatible, but I'm told it gimps you because it's a floating reticle game.

Sins of a Solar Empire is a strategy space game that has a fairly active online community - Starcraft II is more fun imo, but you can save multiplayer games on SINS for later (games can be as long as 16+ hours in 10 person matches). So as far as MMO's go, I recommend Black Prophecy - I didn't like Perpetuum personally, but it is getting a fair number of EVE vets after this fiasco.

Someone said Perpetuum is like a shell corp redist by CCP themselves.

I dunno if its true. But the game does look a lot like eve. A lot of the art, and even the Logo itself. Looks like the Carbon theme.

Its Headquartered in Hungary. Distributed out of Cypress. With No phone.

Someone definately knew how to circumvent laws when they distributed that game.

ere's the thing we started off friends
It was cool but it was all pretend

Since EvE has gone

You dedicated you took the time
Wasn't long till I called you mine
Yeah Yeah
Since EvE has gone

And all you'd ever hear me say
Is how I pictured me with you
That's all you'd ever hear me say

But since EvE has gone
I can breathe for the first time
Im so movin on
Yeah yeah
Thanks to you
Now I get
What I want
Since EvE has gone

How can I put it? you put me on
I even fell for those stupid promises
Yeah yeah
Since Eve has gone

How come I heard you say
"We will not use market transactions"
I guess you never felt that way

But since EvE has gone
I can breathe for the first time
Im so movin on
Yeah yeah
Thanks to you
Now I get
I get what I want
Since EvE has gone

You had your chance you blew it
Out of sight, out of mind
Open your mouth I can't take it
Since EvE has gone

Never played the sequel, though I'd heard that, as well. Privateer was obviously different, as an on-rails solo game in the days before Internet (IIRC), but...Scarily similar to EVE in many ways, don't you think.

In all, though, the Wing Commander universe was mucho-big win.
