there are also a lot of people that sort of randomly resubbed in the past week because they knew there was a new expansion, but didn't know how it was going to turn out.

Yeah I went for the "reactivate your account for 2 months for €20" deal, kinda regretting it now.

Let's also remember; Incarna was/is the most WAITED for expansion in Eve Online.

I've been waiting for it since 2006.

And we're still waiting for it now.

What was released last week wasn't what was promised years ago.

Either way the accountoffskis seem to be over exaggerating thier positions.

After you cancel your sub you can still play for the amount of time you have already paid for. So most people who have unsubbed will be in the game protesting for quite a while. I had only paid for one month myself and my sub is running out in a couple of days so I guess I'll be one of the first to go.

Just because people un-subbed doesn't mean they stopped playing right away.

Over the next month a lot of accounts will run out though.

Same. One account has two weeks or so left, the other 2 months. It's why we've been using the Google Docs thread to present a more accurate metric.

Ive literally seen the number go from ~23,000 to 45,000~ within moments.

Litteraly.

I was showing someone the new loading screen. We were talking about the new ship and turrets. We also commented on how low the number was.

Then, it jumps, ~45,000+

You know, that sounds like a good argument for the white knighters. But it means nothing.

At this moment, CCP is getting a lot of bad press. So far, their responses have all been aimed at the topic that most of the gaming press is laughing at, the silly prices on vanity items, and not the more subtle and less easily headlined effects of MT, which is what this rage is really all about.

To keep looking good in the press, of which CCP's future revenue depends, the numbers need to look good. CCP's past revenue is the protestors that CCP is attempting to quell and ignore. CCP has every motive right now to keep those numbers up. CCP also has the means to keep those numbers up.

I'm not saying they are fixing the numbers with outright edits, or even connecting a few thousand thin clients to TQ. But they do have the ability, and they do not want bad press.

CCP is just a corporation, no better or worse than any other, we all know what corporations will do to protect their profits. CCP is no saint, no more or less than Enron or Goldman Sachs.

Connection numbers mean nothing.

Actually no he hasn't, most of the people unsubbing don't hate the game, we don't like the implications of the new direction CCP is alledgedly taking. I've paid up to when my sub lapses and I'm going to be playing (well kicking up a stink) until the very last minute, call me pendantic if you will but if I've damn well paid for the time, I'm damn well going to use it in any fashion I see fit to.

Nor do the 'I unsubbed' numbers.

So... CCP is lying and the mighty righteous forum geeks who claim to speak for the 399000 players that are still enjoying the game are lying.

Thanks for that important information.

So we can safely subtract anther six or seven from the online numbers.

Yup it's starting to look pretty bad for CCP now.

We live in interesting times; in fact CCP is the kind of company that if things get repetitive we instinctively crank it up a notch. That, we certainly have done this week. First of we have Incarna, an amazing technological and artistic achievement. A vision from years ago realized to a point that no one could have imaged but a few months ago. It rolls out without a hitch, is in some cases faster than what we had before, this is the pinnacle of professional achievement. For all the noise in the channel we should all stand proud, years from now this is what people will remember.

But we have done more, not only have we redefined the production quality one can apply to virtual worlds with the beautiful Incarna but we have also defined what it really means to make virtual reality more meaningful than real life when it comes to launching our new virtual goods currency, Aurum.

Naturally, we have caught the attention of the world. Only a few weeks ago we revealed more information about DUST 514 and now we have done it again by committing to our core purpose as a company by redefining assumptions. After 40 hours we have already sold 52 monocles, generating more revenue than any of the other items in the store.

This we have done after months of research by a group of highly competent professionals, soliciting input and perspective from thought leaders and experts in and around our industry. We have communicated our intention here internally in very wide circles through the Virtual Economy Summit presentation at the GSM, our Fearless newsletter, sprint reviews, email lists and multiple other channels. This should not come as a surprise to anyone.

Currently we are seeing _very predictable feedback_ on what we are doing. Having the perspective of having done this for a decade, I can tell you that this is one of the moments where we look at what our players do and less of what they say. Innovation takes time to set in and the predictable reaction is always to resist change.

We went out with a decisive strategy on pricing and we will stay the course and not flip flop around or knee jerk react to the predictable. That is not saying nothing will change, on the contrary, in fact we know that success in this space is through learning and adapting to _what is actually happening_ and new knowledge gained in addition to what we knew before and expected.

All that said, I couldn’t be prouder of what we have accomplished as a company, changing the world is hard and we are doing it as so many times before! Stay the course, we have done this many times before.

I'm in that google doc.

My account is paid through April 01, 2012 (no joke, just when I happened to set it to yearly resubs about...oh...2005 or so).

When I went for the yearly account plan, I thought I'd never encounter a situation where I'd want to unsub. I rode out the 2006 t20 scandal...dont' remember any serious CCP shenanigans in '07-'09. Then last year, the '18 months' and so on, I rode that out. I thought 'yeah, it's bad, but they are still working on Eve, and maybe I'll get to see Incarna before 2020'.

Then, Tuesday came. I saw that Incarna is a MT vending machine, wrapped in poorly optimized (but very pretty) graphics. I listened to my poor average computer screaming, the fans going full-tilt, side-panel off. I turned off the CQ as, indeed, there's no new functionality pertaining to spaceships, which is the part of the universe-sim that I care about. Incidentally, it's a custom build computer, not some off-the-shelf vendor label.

Since Tuesday, CCP gave us first silence, than a low-level apology (CCP Pann) for their silence, but NOT for their mis-steps. Then we got senior producer CCM Zulu going 'I give no ****s if you are mad at us, and it's okay to price virtual goods at their real world counterpart's price points, and Incarna is awesome, why are you even doubting us when we say it?' and we got Fearless, in which a debate that should not even be taking place, takes place (incidentally, that 'debate' is a tactic to open up people's minds to the idea of MT on top of subscriptions, because yes, that's how fans should be treated, as wallets to be pulled from - also it's a very standard corporate strategy for communicating direction from on-high).

Lastly, I did not unsub because I hate Eve. I played in the beta, and then started subscribing in 2004 (RL issues kept me otherwise occupied between launch and joining). I have been with Eve through thick and thin, I've cheered CCP on, I've recruited RL friends to the game. I have never been a hater of EVE, and until Tuesday I was still firmly on CCP's side. Then, the wool got pulled from my eyes, and a cold wind blew through, and other metaphoric cliches happened, and goddamn but this smells a lot like 'greed is good?' is really 'Greed is good, OBEY.'

funny thing, you can unsub and still log in if you have time remaining. I know I'm going to keep my isk making operations going til the last day. The action of canceling an account, letting CCP know youre not going to be giving them cash going forward is distinctly different from logging in and playing on the time you have already paid for.

Get a clue.

IGNORE THE GOOGLE DOC

There are many thousands more unsubscriptions who really couldn't give too ****s about being in a google doc.

If anything taking tally's just serves to reduce the impact of something which is MUCH larger then those numbers indicate.
