My main has recently acquired a Drake BPO. The BPO has not been researched; the character has Science IV and Industry V and that's about it with related skills.

Is there any chance to see noteworthy returns from this (be it from copying, actually producing, researching and then copying/producing) in a reasonable frame of time (2-3 months), or am I better off trying to sell the BPO as it is right now?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

profit margins are very low for Drakes. You would have to research it for months first before you could make a profit of of it and even then it would take a very long time before the BPO paid for itself.

I would just sell it.

Personally, I would get some research done on it over that 2-3 months and then sell it. A researched BPO will sell for a bit more than a standard one.

That is of course if you want to spend time on it. If not, sell it and "invest" the isk in something else.

If your willing to research it well, and mfg and/or transport the ships to outlying markets (will take a lot of time to roam around and check the markets) you MAY be able to make a profit. This will take a lot of time and effort most likely.

Like others said, it's a low margin BP. Most corps/alliances have one for members. A lot of industrialists have one. It's probably one of the most popular ship BP's in the game. It is nice to have for personal use if you fly the drake. Lose a ship? Eh, toss another one in the oven, save a few iskies.

Last time I looked in Jita, a Drake sold for about 2 million above material cost, which really doesn't make much after subtracting:

* Transaction tax on every sale.
* Broker fee on a sell order.
* Manufacturing costs.

If you buy materials with a buy order, then you have to pay a broker fee for every order too.

This assumes a M.E. 10 minimum BPO, and that you have Production Efficiency 5.

I'll echo some of the replies above: you'll probably make more ISK by researching the BPO and selling it... but don't forget about the broker fee and transaction tax on the sell contract when setting a price.

If you have access to a POS, research it to ME20 / PE2 or so, make copies, sell copies. Long term this is best bet.

You coudl research it and sell it as others suggested as well, but long run copies are normally best.

This is all assuming you have access to a POS Lab or willing to wait it out on public labs. Right now POS Fuel costs are very high, almost hard to make profits on a POS.

Thanks for all your replies. As I have no access to a research station and am not willing to wait several weeks only to be able to invest several months for the BPO to become profitable, I'm going to sell it.
