"Sony's gaming system group is under siege by Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT - News) and Nintendo. "

You know what happens when the PS3 is bought by Microsoft? It will die.

If Microsoft acquires the Playstation, it will mean the end of the Playstation and DUST514 which is PS3 only.

Maybe DUST514 WILL be available for xbox360 after all.

Duke Nukem Forever officially killed the gamer in me (seems every game released now is pretty much the same thing), as long as they don't screw up Netflix when they take the Playstation I don't really care who owns it.

I may or may not get Battlefield 3 or Modern Warfare 3 (definitely not both as I'm not paying twice for the same damn game).

Several problems with this scenario. First M$ wouldnt buy the Sony games division and Sony wouldnt sell it to them. To M$, that division would be a worthless asset as they already have a robust games division. Sony might consider selling the division to a 3rd party, but I think they would be in big trouble to have to do it seeing that their games division is actually one of the better performing divisions for Sony.

What is more interesting is the Entertainment division. Sony has a sizable catalog of movies and music which could be quite profitable for whoever buys that division from Sony. The key will be to make an offer to Sony when they are most vulnerable which could be quite soon. Sony might be desperate for cash if they keep losing money and be willing to unload the entertainment division for song.

Anybody have several billion dollars I can borrow? Gotta buy a movie studio.

Maybe Sony has a 'Mercedes' brand identity mind set. It wants to leverage high quality IP and products based on what it has done in the past. But now when you have a BMW engine in a Rolls Royce consumers are not so much fussed about the components of a product. They are more concerned about the resultant product. The cell cpu based PS3 was very fancy but it did not garner enthusiasm from some game developers such as John Carmack. But the PS4 will have to be based on the cell cpu to cater for PS3 owners who have PS3 games. At least manufacturing costs of current PS3's are now less than a third. But the PS4 will probably be another steep ROI investment. Sony being a Japanese corporation will have great technologists but I suspect a lot of dead wood in the boardroom. Which could be the reason for a lot of dislocated decisions. When Planetside came out it was revolutionary. But later some boardroom muppet wanted to plaster Sony logos in the game and BFR mechs were so unbalanced it ruined the game.

One type of console that I saw not to long ago that was revolutionary was basically a console->terminal. The processing and graphic rendering was done across the internet in a server farm. The erm.. end graphics was sent across the internet to the console->terminal. I don't know if this is actually feasible with say a 50mbit broadband connection and 50-100ms latencies. Even if you cant pipe 720p compressed game play frames in high detail on a par with a PS3 you could have a Nintendo type console->terminal that offers great games but not with uber graphics - Google with its legions of hugely powerful data centers could do this.
