Apparently, people don't seem to understand the concept of "vanity items". Vanity items are things that people have as symbols of status. As it stands, the price of the monocle makes it a "Rolls Royce". Everyone may want one, but not everyone can afford it. I would like it to stay that way. I for one, plan to get one (once all the bugs in Incarna are smoothed over) and I don't want everyone to be able to afford one. If CCP lowers the price of the monocle, it will go from beinga a Rolls to a Hundai.
What good is a vanity item if everyone has one? It becomes a KMart item. I DO NOT WANT THAT! I would prefer to be only one of, perhaps a hundred people on the server who can afford one. That makes it a VANITY item.
As far as the clothes, yes, they are a bit overpriced and should be made more affordable for everyone. But there should be a few items that only a few can afford.

Looking forward to the only 1000 units avaible purple glowing cybernetic eye for 12000 aur; that I could understand pricewise. And I would buy a purple cybernetic eye at that cost, if it goes with my future pirate hat and medieval outfit ^^ |

One of the few good things with the current prices in the NEX is *drum roll*
Plex prices won't sky-rocket to 500m(ish) because everyone wants a new shirt/monocle :)

Yeah, introduce high priced items to keep the plex market from exploding. if everyone could convert a plex to aur and buy all the current items in the shop in one go... phew, alot would've tried it potentialy causing havoc; in that regard its a smart move. |

I agree with the OP, even if I would never pay that price for one. BUT, the problem I'm having is why there isn't a large spread of items available at prices from low to high? The high end wouldn't be devalued if the same things weren't available on the low end. |

yo im sure they will add cheaper items sooner or later ... wouldnt it be fun to add a monocle that looks extremly ugly for 1€ but if you want the top items .. you need to dish out money ...up to you |

If there would have been enough different items to chose from from the start, it would be unique because people could chose what fits them best. Having only 1 super expensive piece of eyeware isn't what I'd call, special.
Quite frankly, from a technical viewpoint the monocle isn't worth even 5 dollars. If this thing was made from gold plated casings and diamond set glass in the real world, it could be justified. But as a digital asset, its a really simple model to create and texture with some sculpting on a characters face. Even a Jet Can is more impressive and harder to make.

Not necessarily true.... I'm not buying one because I don't want something that ugly on my avatar. Besides characters with them look silly with only one eyebrow. |

I have to agree. This reminds me of the movie "Crazy People" where Dudley Moore is placed in an asylum and turns the place into an advertising agency. One of the ads they created was for the Jaguar car, "For guys who want hand jobs from women they've never met." So what if people buy Jaguar's. If they have the money then they've either earned it or inherited it. I don't look at them and say, "compensating for a small *****?" I simply look and admire the car. Not all of us are destined to drive Jaguars. Not all of us are destined to have a monocle. The main reason I agree... I pay for my main account. I use Plex for my alt. I definitely do not want that price skyrocketing so that half the EVE population can buy a monocle. I have 0 problems with vanity items regardless of price. If you can afford them and want them, then by all means buy them. I do have a problem when it expands to encompass enhancements that affect game play or the game economics. And believe me, if I could justifiably afford a Jaguar, I'd have one. Instead, I drive a Ford. |

Vanity is simply used here to describe the fact that it has no function, not that it is a status symbol. Secondly, comparing a virtual monocle to a rolls royce is tragic. This isn't some high quality, precision engineered optic. It's a very plain 3d model.
Once it is modelled, you're no longer paying the 3d artist, and you have a license to print money. Most 3d studios will let you spit out something of similar quality in a couple of hours.
Will you send me $60 if i send you a virtual copy of my brown monocle?
