I heard from a few different people that weapons while linked do less total damage, than if you were to fire them individually. I was hoping somebody could confirm or deny this. If it is indeed true, could somebody explain to me why this is? I tried to do a search, but did not see any posts about this topic.

Actually this is partially true - in a round about way

strictly speaking a group of 4 guns will do the same damage as 4 ungrouped weapons of the same type when shooting at something with full health

however when they shoot at something that is about to die "overkill" comes into play - if only 2 of the 4 guns was required to kill the target the other 2 are wasted and cannot fire again until the cycle is complete - if ungrouped 2 of the guns would be able to fire on the next target while the first 2 cycled

tbh its a small distinction and most the time the ability to change ammo on all guns at once (at least for my Lasers) outweighs the small dps loss

You also have to deal with hit quality averaging between the weapons. Ungrouped, one turret might get a wrecking shot, but when grouped, you may not ever see one.

Grouped weapons, are easier on the server, since only identical mods can be linked up. (Only 1 DB call for what's being fired instead of 2-8 calls per volley)
Upon firing ze guns, the server pulls the info for the weapon and loaded ammo, then rolls the dice for each gun, including tracking and all that. The total damage is then applied to the target.

Similar is done for missiles. We get a 'Super Missile' based on the stats of the individual missiles that would normally be fired. There's a few different calculations applied in cases of defender and smartbomb interception, but it's pretty much the same deal.

Now as to weak, easily killed targets, I'll ungroup, or go with several small groups, to quickly cycle through, instead of waiting for the full time to kill each one.
For the big stuff, I keep everything grouped into 1, for the best alpha to break through the tank faster.

This is not true when it comes to missiles and your enemy is using defenders. This applies mostly to PvE, but when grouped, missiles only face 1 defender at most. If you fire them individually, each missile has a chance to run into a defender.

Not true. Try testing it.

It is true, and it has been tested.

When using weapons with high Volley damage (artillery, beam lasers etc), large weapons groups are a waste of ammo.

Considering that a Maelstrom with 1400mm guns will pop a cruiser with only 4 shots, firing a group of 8 is overkill and a waste of ammo.

Better to split your guns into two groups of 4 and take on two smaller targets at a time.
