The terminology being thrown around by the online press is a bit conflicting in regards to how DUST 514 payment will work, but my current understanding is:
  1. You buy a digital download and get an equal or lesser value of Aurum to spend on Micro-transaction goods.
  2. There is no monthly subscription from this point onwards.
  3. Micro-transactions are the remaining source of revenue for the game.
Is this understanding correct? If so, doesn't that make DUST 514 a Buy To Play (B2P) game, rather than Free To Play (F2P)?

I'd like to get an answer for that, too. Everything I read has said the game will be MT-supported, but some of the articles are conflicting about whether or not there will be a charge to download the game. After reading through some more, it seems like you'll have to buy the digital download. Any idea on the pricing?

Downloading the game is free.

You can buy Virtual Goods to bolster your stuff. However, like with Aurum items, you can buy them with ISK if someone sells them :)

Difference being that in Dust, the virtual goods include weapons, upgrades, etc and not just vanity items.

That's not what CCP said in this interview with Massively:

Quote:
"We're going to distribute the game through PSN. It will be a digital download on day one, on release. You'll pay a cover charge to get the game, but that money gets converted to in-game credits that you can spend on whatever you want to. But you can then continue playing the game not buying anything, so you can still enjoy the game without buying stuff."

Full F2P and digital download. If I recall correctly, you'll also be able to buy a retail box with a code which can be used to convert it's full price to AUR.
upd: failed to recall correctly, check 2nd post above.

Difference being that in Dust you don't pay for the game time, and the expansions are free, like we're used to with EVE.

CCP needs an incentive for players to grab their wallets, cause vanity items alone won't be enough IMHO.

I'm looking forward to DUST514 and if I like it, I'll grab my wallet too Cool

Evelgrivion, your understanding is correct:

There is a fee to purchase the game, which is then rolled over into virtual currency used in DUST 514.
There is no monthly subscription fee; virtual goods sales are where the revenue comes from.

We're contacting the press when we see errors and requesting corrections. Thanks.

From what I have understood so far you have both ISK and AURUM in DUST.

ISKcan be used to buy stuff (general stuff), AURUM is used for microtransactions. (cool stuff)

Stuff bought with AURUM can be put on the market for ISK

But both currencies hold sway.

Since the economies of EVE and DUST 514 are the same I personally think that the best

Merc outfits will be payed in AURUM so they can use that earn money on the market or

buy Fanzy Schnizzle for themselves or even hire additional merc with it (bribes)

Micro-transactions as in $5 to make my armor/vehicles red instead of black? Or Micro-transactions as in 5 for every assault rifle I use?

You're welcome. I see you mentioned a similar media quote in another thread. They are also being contacted about making a correction. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
