I almost never see Gallente ships even in Gallente space. Should I just re-train into Caldari ships? I keep hearing hybrid turrets are garbage, I've had good luck with blasters but they eat a lot of cap. Everytime I've been killed its been by someone in Caldari gear and all the guides seem to recommend Caldari ships. Is there anything besides Caldari?

Depends on what you want. For L4 missions for instance, all races are viable; Caldari have quite a a few very good mission runners (Raven, CNR, Golem, Nighthawk, Tengu), Gallente has the Dominix (semi-afk drone boat), Minmatar has the Maelstrom, Vargur and Sleipnir. Amarr is a bit limited as their damage output is always EM/Thermal so they usually are best for missions in Amarr space where there's a lot of EM weak rats but all their battleships are pretty decent.

If you want other things, other races are prevalent. PvP is a lot of Minmatar and Amarr, with limited Caldari (mostly jammer boats, Drake, Tengu), in small fleets Gallente have a few good ships too.

It just depends on what you want.

Gallente ships are not as bad as you think, and loads of them are around. I asked a question about the feasability of using non hybrib weapons on a gallente battle ship because of how crap hybids are and how bad the gallente hybrid bonus is, you can check the thread here:

i woulnd just right them off just yet.

Gallente ships don't have to be fit with hybrids.
An awesome ship like the myrmidon truly shines when fit with projectiles. You have a really good BC that you can armor or shield tank as desired and has great drone bonuses.
And a neut domi, lemme tell you, epic sweet for pvp.
While rails leave something to be desired, blasters are still good if you know how to use em.
If you ever got jumped by blaster mega you know how painful that can be.

Seriously, if you're getting killed by Caldari in pvp, you're doing it wrong. Minmatar I can understand, but Caldari ? Razzugh
Their only decent pvp boat is the drake because its so hard to kill, but its DPS is feeble.

Thanks that thread was pretty helpful. And yeah I guess it just depends. I'm gunning for PvP and I'm ok with getting my teeth kicked in a few times as long as I am not getting killed because my ships are innately gimped.

Edit: Yeah a Myrmidon is what I'm flying. I'm pretty in love with it. Just all around awesome boat, but everyone kept telling me Gallents crap lol.

The main gripe that everyone has about Gallente is that their boats are not superfast like minmatar and you need to be up close for the blasters.
Webs used to be much more effective than they are today as well.

While Minmatar is currently best over all, I'd still rate Gallente second place. Opinion will differ on this Razz
Each race has excellent ships and shines in particular areas.

pro-tip : A passive shield tanked myrm with autocannons uses ZERO cap. This can be incredibly usefull when facing neuting ships.

Alternatively, a triple repper/dual cap booster fitted myrm can tank pretty amazingly ugh

I have problems with drones since disconnecting makes you lose money with them. Other than that they look ugly as poop but they can take quite a beating in missions.

Regarding your actual question (are Gallente ships worth flying?):


The reason you're not seeing a lot of Gal ships in PvP probably has more to do with the fact that many of their more popular ships are specialty ships that operate by not being seen at all (the Arazu/Lachesis are awesome, but are stealth boats, the Gallente Black ops has the best offensive power in the category, but ditto) or by not being seen until it's too late (blaster boats have to warp right on bloody top of you, not very easy if you see them coming).

In PvE situations you should be seeing quite a lot of the Dominix, Vexor, and Myrmidon, at minimum. While these are certainly useful in PvP as well (the Domi especially being downright overpowered in terms of flexibility and sheer nonsense value) they're most popular in mission running, where they can be used to do things the lazy way (get aggro, activate tank, release ze drones).

To answer your implied question (is it worth it for _you_ to fly Gallente?)

Probably not. As a newer player, you'll want to initially stick with relatively simple-to-fly builds for PvP. Minmatar is the flavor of the month in low-sec for a reason and Amarr is the longer-running popular pvp mode for the same reason: they're much, much easier to use effectively. Gallente PvP boats usually require either a lot of very strict range control (blasters) or use mechanics that severely limit your mobility in terms of warp (drones). It's harder to use them well, so I'd advise training probably minmatar for now and then going back to Gallente once you're more experienced.

On PvE grounds I'd say go Caldari since you have issues with drones. While PvE Gallente gunships _exist_ (nothing wrong with the megathron) they're fewer and further between than Caldari or Amarr. Minmatar ship use more split weapon systems and thus require more SP investment.

(Side note: hybrid turrets are somewhat underpowered compared to projectiles and lasers, but hardly to the extent the forums would have you believe. The game is balanced enough that basically any race can do well in PvE and PvP if you play toward its strengths.)

Before you discount Gallente completely, consider the following things you can get:

- A Myrm. Awesome for PVP due to OMG HOW MANY REPS!? Really, triple rep Myrms are lumps of mother****ing iron, spewing drones and autocannons/blasters of hate. Awesome for low level and AFK Level 3 missions due to "Drop drones, collect bacon" style gameplay.

- A Domi. Awesome for PVP due to neuts out the yazzoo. Awesome for low level and AFK Level 4 missions due to "Drop drones, collect bacon" style gameplay.

Many other ships too, but the vastly overlooked "pro" with Gallente is their ships have a great role in PVP and PVE. Amarr are fairly gimped in PVE (you need to be in their space, really..) and Caldari are fairly gimped in PVP (missiles are fail). IMO this puts Gallente on par with Minmitar in terms of versatility.

At lower skill levels, Gallente are also better at PVP than minnie ships, as they don't have the split tanking and weapon systems problem that comes from Minmitar ships (you train shields and gunnery to make your cane win, then get to battleships and want a phoon .. which then leaves you wanting torps and armour, for instance..). You spec out armour to max, and your tanking skill training is over.

In certain scenarios Gallente trump Minmitar, too. In a gang as a DPS dealer? Brutix beats the other BC's hands down.

tl;dr - it's all subjective. Whine on the forums should be taken with a pinch of salt. Or 6.
