Significantly under the influence of alcohol and nostalgia I have created this thread to celebrate what Eve once was, and what we used to love.

Whether you're super cool and remember cruise missile Kestrels and Thoraxes with a billion drones or still cool but slightly newer and think the 50% HP buff was pretty swell bro, post what you remember about 'pre-patch' eve.

Back in the day ... Machariels were the poor man's faction battleship (I love Russians)

Waaaaay back in my day when I started there were no such things as customs offices or extactors, you had to Mine Planets with your hands like men. To get it into space you had to lug it up a mountain and jump.

4 Months later CCP catered to the I wanna Mine Planets without impossible labour crowd. My Niche profession became mainstream, 3 months was too old to catch up with new Technology and I lost out.

Thank You CCP!

I find myself also under the influence, and thinking of the days before warp to 0 and nano-phoons owning everything in sight. Even better was gingermagician gate camping hagilurs gates with an arty tempest or cruise raven. Warp to 0 changed the game so drastically.

come to think of it pvp was way better then.

EDIT: mightve been a torp raven actually.....torps had a rediculous range then too.

FYI I started in February 2004.

I remember:

Dual-MWD Thoraxes hitting ridiculous speeds.

Having 15 drones (and not being in a carrier)

There were 2 types of drones: combat drones (small, medium, large) and mining drones. No Webber, ECM, Nos, Sentry, Tracking Distruptor, Sensor Dampener, or RR drones.

There NOT being Tech 2 variants of a lot of modules. (WTB T2 missile launcher?!)

Only a couple T2 ships. I think we had HACs and Interceptors and that was it...

No Destroyers or Battlecruisers.

No capships.

The Osprey, a Domi, or an Armageddon were the best mining ships in the game.

Scorpion back before it was an ECM ship when it had the Shield resistance buff the Navy Scorp has now.

Ravens shooting Torps that did AoE damage... it was suicide tackling for a gang with Ravens.

Cruise / Torps doing full damage versus frigs before the missile system was reworked (see signature, I'm the guy with the calculator who figured out the missile formula).

Crazy long range torps (let's face it, they were easy mode).

Mines! (Though they'd been pulled out not long before I joined EVE, they were still all over the market.)

Kestrels with cruise missiles yes - I have one with Heavy Missiles still loaded in my old "home" system for nostalgia's sake (I was too noob for Cruise back then. :p)

Having a battleship meant you were badass... and having the money for one meant you were rich!

Insta-bookmarks. If you were elite, you had thousands of them! (I still haven't gotten rid of them all, did some housecleaning on them a few weeks back but I've still got some in every region.)

Blueprint lottery; I never won, though I was friends (and CEO of) a guy who won Ishtar and Vagabond BPOs within 3 days of eachother... he got so much convo spam that he quit EVE. Sad

Deep space safes... nobody could ever find you... better than having a cloak fitted.

The old (awful) escrow system.

The old probe system. Wait... how many AUs is a Ferret again?!

Titans being a myth... fighting one piloted by a Dev on the test server for the first time, being completely awed... wondering if we were ever going to see one on TQ.

Nano-everything... though I guess that was just a few years back.

Nos that always worked regardless of how much cap you had.

90% webber.

High points:

Running a corp of 20-odd members, all friends from the game PlanetSide.

Podding the 7th most-wanted in EVE (a well-known merc corp CEO) and collecting the then huge 101m isk bounty!

Taking on a BoB T2 Frig / Cruiser fleet in my Carrier solo back when I was one of a half-dozen people in an alliance of thousands that had a cap ship.

Doing the same versus a RAZR 6-man BS gang, and sending them packing with the FC's Vindicator at 10% hull (if only you could have overloaded tackle mods back then!) Nowadays you'd just have 10 SCs dropped on you if you tried that.

Popping AAA HACs with a Revelation in Siege parked a couple hundred km from our static 10/10 (mmm those were nice) they were always trying to farm. Lawl!

Bringing hostile invading blobs to a halt with a single interdictor bubble back before you could just hotdrop your fleets anywhere.

Losses that probably wouldn't have happened in the current EVE:

Losing a Cerberus to a static NPC cruiser spawn (remember those?!) because of a horny girlfriend.

Losing a Raven via CONCORDOKEN chasing a pirate in Aunenen into Nonni (back when it was a trade hub).

Losing an Eagle in EC-P8R because I warped to a moon during a gate camp ("Oh, right, there are POS in this game now?!")

Losing an Interceptor full of faction gear in HED-GP because I followed the wrong set of insta-bookmarks.

...and I'm sure I'll remember more **** later.

It seems they've done to pvp what they do to everything in the world: transform it from an artform into some kind of product.

I remember the time before systems had names, yes even in high sec, so u had to sit with pen and paper writing down every system you jumped trough to find your way back. they where all called 439fdjdfl, and things like that. (oh and you had no map or auto pilot either;P)

I remember the last day of beta when everyone got max skills and infinite money. After beta 2003 Large guns still did full dmg to small ships. Tracking was not in the game yet;P

Ah, the good ole days... When losing a Stabber because a Bloodclaw hit the newbie I was trying to help out was commonplace.

When Cruise Caracals were the number one pvp ships.

When Cavalry Ravens were number two.

When the Itty 5 was the biggest cargo hold to be found anywhere.

When the only Tech 2 module in the game was Miner 2s.

When Tech 2 ships were a myth.

When Tempests could hit orbiting Slashers with 1400mm easily.

When the Apoc was used more for mining than the Raven was used for pvp.

When the Raven was the most popular pvp BS in the game.

When the discovery of the Gankageddon scared whole gangs of Ravens back into port.

When the Dominix was the only Battleship (as in one ship) in the game owned by players and it was a pirate ship.

When CVA was just a collection of Shakespearean sounding corps that pvped once in awhile.

When mOo was the scariest ticker in the game.

When Yulai was the only place to go to buy or sell.

When you could one shot kill a Vigil with a single Inferno Torpedo.

When most pvp was solo.

When gate camps were just a couple of battleships taking potshots at passerby.

When Amamake was the place for a Torpedo Celestis to fight a Cruise Rupture.

When the best cruiser mining ship was the Thorax.

When the best cruiser was the Thorax.

When using a Tempest to mine was economically sound.

When running a Stain Alliance blockade in a Stabber was possible.

When jumping into 0.4 to mine Jaspet was a good idea.

When snowballs were not melted.

When CCP were Jovian.

When TomB still had speaking priviledges.

When stacking penalties were new.

When missiles were nerfed.

When Sovereignty was introduced, and then reintroduced based off an idea I laid out...

Ninja-mining Crokite in EC-P8R in an Osprey, having Insta BM's to the gate. And having SS in middle of nowwhere where you left your giant cans and your Itty for getting the ore back to Torrinos.

Jumpin out of the starter (nooby) system for the first time...

Mining the first ore in your nooby ship, and talkin to 2 other noobs. Then being invited to join a corp by a older player.

Getting my first month of subscription payed by one of the two noobs stated above (didnt have a creditcard back then).

Doing lvl 3 missions and hoping a Local Hull Conversion Expanded Cargo would drop (t2 expanded cargo's didn't exsist back then, and the Local Hull was very expensive). Made some nice isk on those.

Doing exploration when it was first implemented, and making loads of isk with selling invention related items. (bought my first Carrier from that isk)

When carriers could still hold 3 itty 5's in it's hold which where maxed out in cargospace and you could fill those up, and so get a couple of pos in and out of system in one jump.

Back in the day when my corp gave me a Raven anda Moa for putting in the 2 day effort to map the Bookmarks needed for insta travel between our 0.0 and occupied territory and the safest trade hub.

At the time I felt like a GOD in my raven ....
Torps used to smack alot of stuff senseless!
--

When Caldari only just had the Ferox and loads of people where like ... wtf.

--

When I first undocked in my Ibis and a big Raven and Amarr BS flew out infront of me ... i poo'd myself and then made the promiss to fly both those ships (ability to fly may varey)

--

When going into 0.4 made you more paranoid than a drug selling jihad terrorist at customs ...

--

My first ship loss at the hands of a pirate - almost broke my spirit.

--

My first mining op with a corp and thinking I could happily set each one of them on fire.
(Seriously hauling ore to the base in a badger is NOT a good way to spend a few hours)

--

Losing a mission ship to my BF hornily blind siding me and resetting the PC for some attention. Got grumpy after!

--

Havign isk, logging out and not having isk the next day because at the pub, super equiping that Kestrel seemed like such a good idea!

I wanted to start playing together with my friend who choose another race (Minmatar - Caldari). When we wanted to meet to do missions for his agents, so I spent good 1.5 hours or more to get there with my mission ship. Later I called him to come work for my agent. We did that, and that was last time we were playing together ;)

That was because there was no "warp to 0" option, but 15km from gate only.

I'm not as old as some of the people in this thread, but when I started salvaging was new (so no large rigs). Flying around in a kestral with 3 launchers and a salvager I doing level 1 missions hoping to get a capacitor control console worth 500k (insane money for a newb at the time).

Back in 2003 before anyone had BS's, the first one I ever saw was a Megathron, it was massive!

Mining in a Probe and taking ages to get to a Thorax, the uber miner of its time!

Before T2 and the whole fiasco involving its introduction.

Scorpions tanked to high heaven without today's stacking penaltiesShocked

m0o CorpYARRRR!!

Pre superhighway and warp to zero, Eve was very big then!

The game has matured a lot and in many ways is better but has lost a lot of its excitement and unpredictability. As my first MMO it was quite an eye openerLaughing
