This is all fine and good, but why do you insist that Gallente ships always armor tank? There are a ton of good shield tanking options out there and not giving it a go really limits your options as a Gallente pilot. You don't get the huge diversity out of the Myrmidon if you can't actually, you know, use your full range of options. And for L3s (that is where this thread started, right?) shield buffering and blitzing is almost always the best way to go (except perhaps on the Harbinger).

Because having half baked shield skills and half baked armor skills is just plain worse than having good skills in one and no skills in the other.

He should finish one, then decide if he wants to do the other.

Gal ships get armor bonuses, hence training armor skills makes more sense.

Yes, you can shield tank some of the gal ships. But what you are doing is basically telling a noob to train for a corner case instead of a general case. Which I don't think is doing them any favors.

Especially if he decides to do something other than run missions.

Depends on application.

For PvE, even half baked shield skills on a Lv3 Myrm are going to be better overall, particularly with projectiles. I was running an Arty/Shield Mrym for almost all of my period building the standings for level 4, sure the ship is active rep bonused, but it means that you are always watching your cap deplete, particularly if you are using hybrid guns. You stack some long range guns, drop your drones and burn off to orbit and kill at leisure. Plus you can run a MWD cap stable without a stack of cap rechargers or boosters. Its pretty pointless in a Vexor, but shields are a viable option on a lot of the BC and up sub-caps.

Most gallente BS/BC has at least 5 mid slots, and average shield and armor HP

That means shield tanking is viable.

Both suck. They are inferior to every weapon system available, regardless if you have amazing skills and know how to fly. Invest you're SP into Drones, Missiles, Projectiles, or Lasers.

Put it this way, if they were good why are hybrid boats among the least used ships in EVE?

I think what I plan on doing is using a blaster set up to farm isk until I have a decent laser skill and amarr skill. shouldnt take too long as I just started playing and am not very far into guns/gallente.

If you've just started, and your only interest currently is to run missions assuming that's how to intend to farm ISK, don't waste time with guns yet.

Train a Drake, seriously. There's a reason it's the most used ship in the game. It's cheap, it's reasonably effective and it requires very little skill points to make it so.

You'll always feel underpowered with guns until you put a fair bit of skill into them, meaning Skill 5 and 4's - 5's in support, and even then they always feel underdone for PVE.

I understand you've already started with guns, but don't do what I did and spend months trying to make guns work in missions, just train heavy missiles.

Once you have your revenue stream sorted out, it's like having a trade to fall back on, then you can look at other aspects of the game.

Remeber your character race has ZERO effect on how your ships perform, just because you were born Gallente doesn't mean you have to fly thier crap.

Blasters need you in punch range. Getting to that range with brutix may be hard to do. For PvE stick with rails and drones. For ratting you do not really need a crazy tank. This setup should be sufficent to handle all your ratting needs:

[Brutix, Bratix]
Damage Control II
Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
Tracking Enhancer II

Dread Guristas Large Shield Booster
Invulnerability Field II
10MN Afterburner II
Medium Electrochemical Capacitor Booster I, Cap Booster 800

200mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge M
200mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge M
200mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge M
200mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge M
200mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge M
200mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge M
200mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge M

Medium Ancillary Current Router I
Medium Core Defence Capacitor safeguard I
Medium Core Defence Capacitor safeguard I

Hammerhead II x5

DG booster is not very expensive. But you could also use the best named if your finances are low.

Replace railgun/blasters (they sucks) to Acannons/arti in any fit for the win.

I was telling my corpmates yesterday my dual 250 rails (smallest BS rails) have consistantly out damaged my Nuetron (largest BS blasters) fit even in there optimal , when going for 15 km ranges

I can confirm what others have already said here, do not train railguns.

If you want to sit around grinding out boring missions, go hunting around and train for an Ishtar as that's probably "the best" Gallente ship around. The good news is that all those drone skills will come in very handy for a Dominix and then eventually a Carrier if you choose to go that route.

There are some wonderful droneboat combinations like the "killdozer" Dominix, which uses neuts or nosferatus to disable enemy ships whilst the drones eat them alive (not very useful against projectile-wielding vessels as they are cap-less)

Sadly CCP are somewhat hostile toward drones due to the server load they create.

If you insist on flying turreted vessels, just train Minmatar. I doubt we'll be seeing any nerf or balancing for at least another year so you should get some good use out of the skills.

FWIW, I started out with Gallente, training drones and hybrid turrets.

There are some pretty nice Dominix fits that are fairly low sp and fairly decent for missioning as you learn to play, and they use railguns (though you're welcome to use projectiles - though no lasers, because of cap use).

The reality is that the best way to do things (in my not-so-humble opinion) is to pick a ship you'd like to fly, train up to take advantages of the strengths it has, and continue until you realize you're out of things to do to make that ship better. Then pick another ship, do the same. This works great until you suddenly "Oh neat I'm crosstrained and I'm pretty good at a bunch of stuff". Once you're at that point, you need to start looking at what you'd like to shore up - maybe you didn't spend any time in shield tanked ships, so you want to clean up that so you can try that shield hyperion fit you saw the other day, etc etc.

Blasters are like shotguns in Call of Duty: Black Ops, they only work in such specific circumstances that you might as well use an assault rifle.

Railguns are like a sniper rifle, the maps aren't big enough to justify their use and you're better off with an assault rifle.

Projectiles are assault rifles.
