My computer can't support the characters, atleast, not really. When I did the character design on entry, it was incredibly slow, like 5 minutes just for me to press the bare minimums. I'm hoping it will be optional because I find that incarna will probably not work for me.

My computer is 3 years old and it runs the character creator like a dream. Yours must be ANCIENT.

my rig wasn't really expensive, it's 1 year old now, I paid like 390 bucks for it? Look a lot, you can buy an entire new rig quite cheap these days. :)

You might want to buy and use a PC that is made this century, instead of blaming everyone else for your failure to adhere to the required specifications needed.

It's obvious Incarna won't be optional, it's an expansion that will be incorporated into the game just like the previous ones have been.

I just thought I'd mention that I found the character creator to be quite a bit slower than the Captains Quarters test on Duality, maybe you'll get lucky.

On my home brew machine I found the character thing so painful that this is the best that I could get after what seemed to be an epoch or two trying to manipulate the character.

In game, however, it's a different matter and Incarna runs fine. In fact, on mmy zippy laptop I can't Eve to run at all but on my crufty old server which is sitting to the back of me I can run Eve fine and my tub is happily mining away.

If you can get Eve onto a pen drive and find a chum with a half decent machine then run it on his machine, create your character and then go back to your current machine and you ought to be fine.

You using an etch-a-sketch? Very Happy

Is shader model 3 a requirement? That started being supported in 2004, correct?

Incarna will be as optional as Eve Online is optional.

Incarna will not be optional (at least CQ won't be) BUT there's a chance that you can reduce the CQ graphics/simulation detail more than you can for the character creator, so you might get a decent framerate even on ancient machines.
Have you tried selecting the lowest graphics options for characters ? Disabling physical modeling ? You know, reduce load on your (apparently very weak) graphics card ?
WHAT IS your graphics card anyway ? How much cash would you be willing to spend on new hardware ? Is your machine a desktop or a laptop ?

Jesus, just put the 30 year old ZX spectrum in the closet and buy a new PC.

You may want to get the Duality client installed and check out the Captain's Quarters, it's not as bad performance-wise as the character creator.

While I am looking forward to Incarna, I really wish they had stuck to the "you don't have to get out of your pod if you don't want to" thing various people have posted over the years. I like the captain's quarters dealie, but I don't want to be in there every time I dock.

there's lot of option son duality, but they don't works well for all graphic cards... still some bugs.
removing the physical clothing, or putting specs at total low made my games running at 5 fps for example...
but don't seems to have much people with this from what i read
but when you're able to run sleepers ano on 3 clients at the same time at more than 30 fps, you don't really like being at less than 20 fps on a single CQ...

For my part I am slightly concerned about this issue as well. When travelling I run EVE through Wine on my work's 2008 model Macbook Pro (Ubuntu install). Although recent, the Macbook is underpowered and really struggles with the character creator. It would be irritating if I could no longer do this.

TBH - I also agree that there should be an option to NOT use Incarna. I suspect my rig will be fine, but my understanding was that early on CCP promised to make Incarna Non-Mandatory.

Also - in some cases, I dont want to leave my ship if Im in a hurry. I want to dock, open the market, buy the stuff I want, load it up and get the funk out of the station.

I definately dont want to have to check and uncheck the Incarna option every time I want to dock depending on whether I want to leave the ship or not (de-pod). There should simply be a button in the station panel to allow me to leave the ship.

I do believe that the de-podding cinematic scene (which was removed I believe) should be a "check, uncheck" option in the Options page however.

If Im an ub3r rich immortal pilot - shouldnt I have lackey's that scurry around to load goods into my ship for me and hastily look at their data-pads to ensure theyhave whatIwantanditswithinthetime-frameImlookingfororelsetheywillbebeaten!?

Well post some specifications, as something (probably the video card) is not on par with even the cheap stuff of 3 years back. For instance, I am running an ATI 4650, which cost me like 40 euros 2 years ago (= very low grade, even then) and it has no trouble at all with the new stuff. As some others have mentioned, this forum lot might be able to suggest a very cheap solution. If you are using a laptop without a dedicated GPU, you might be out of luck, but then you cannot expect continued support for that from a game, as it would not be a machine designed with games in mind.

I could put together a rig for 300$ that could run 90% of the current market on at least medium graphic settings, and that's starting from ground zero. If you had a half decent setup already you could just grab a new processor and video card for 100$ and be set.

cheap computers are designed for business and surfing the web, sure you can build a rig for 300 bucks, but its going to be a business class machine that's not rated to run games.

oh sure, some will run, even this old beast of a game but when you start throwing a port of a 3D modeler into the mix you will not get good performance.

best thing I can suggest is build your own, stop buying best buy and walmart specials that are already mostly legacy when you open the box, these are crap machines for the masses with gimpy business class processors and gimpy on-board gfx, or if you are lucky last years entry level AMD card

I can find a computer sold "as new" RIGHT NOW that could have serious problems running EVE at all, or I could find one made nearly 6 years ago that can handle EVE just fine.
It's mainly a matter of what video card you have, but some other things can be important too.
Post computer specs, ASAP.

And quite frankly - we dont know everyone's economic situation.

If you can purchase a rig that can handle Incarna/WiS - count yourself lucky, rather than criticizing those that cannot. To criticize those that cannot purchase an updated rig is the ultimate in Douche-Baggery. You dont know their circumstances in r/l.

It would make a whole lot more sense to just make it optional.

Yes, it would be nice to have Incarna fully optional, but alas, priorities change, and getting the "technology" tested and attracting a slightly different kind of subscribers is more far important to CCP than the few people that will be left behind.
I would fully support a version of EVE that has minimal hardware requirements (and drastically reduced graphic "oomph"), or even a web frontend to do just about anything you can possibly do while docked without having to actually log into the client at all, but that's a different story, and for different reasons.

HOWEVER, getting an almost entry-level video card that sould handle Incarna decently should cost roughly as much as 4 to 6 months of EVE sub.
It's not exactly wallet-breaking, no matter what economic situation you might be in.
If you're really so strapped for cash that you can't spare 60-90$ for a hardware upgrade in the upcoming months, you have much bigger problems than not being able to run EVE on your current machine, and not being able to play EVE might actually be a blessing in disguise.

On the surface of it I agree, however Ive run into quite a number of people playing EVE over the years that use this as their primary outlet for entertainment, and they dont make a lot of cash in the real world. Some work in walmart, a number are unemployed (especially in Iceland after their economic meltdown) etc, some look after the infirmed etc, and really have no life or income source.

Ive even run into a number of situations where the corp pools cash together (in r/l) to buy a member a new rig so they can keep playing.

In my experience (surprisingly) the r/l prosperity of the EVE player base is pretty low.
