Ok so need some help with the bomb. I have failbombed 3 times now. (miss)

I am clicking the "approach to" and then once alligned and moving I stop and let ir rip. I have missed 3 x and I am positive I would have killed a tengu that was already less then 50% shields if my bomb actually hit.

Need some help

Don't feel too bad, I don't think you would have killed a tengu, even at half shields with just one bomb.

What's going wrong is likely in the stop that you're doing before launching. Bombs follow along a vector determined by your ship's attitude. Meaning where you're pointing, it goes. So when you stop and the ship settles a bit as it is often wanting to do, the bomb is fired in the wrong direction.

Do not stop approaching before launching, just launch. Also, make sure the target is the correct distance away when launching. A quick check of the explosion radius, velocity, and time until detonation should give you an idea of how far they need to be. I believe 30km from your launch point is where the bomb will detonate.

Agreed, when you stop, your ship's attitude levels to the plane of the system you're in, and can cause the bomb to go way off line. You're doing everything right up til you stop.. approach, achieve range, decloak, IMMEDIATELY FIRE BOMB, then GTFO. Your ship speed has no effect on how far the bomb goes, so you don't need to stop.

And your ship will not be going fast enough to travel into the killzone of the bomb so if you do decide to stick around after the launch, you don't have to worry about blowing yourself up.

FWIW You weren't even moving in my direction, and didn't hit me at all. From my POV, it appeared you were orbiting me.

I was sitting perfectly still, pretending to be AFK, up until I got the redbox / scram, so if you were aligned / approaching me, you would have hit me.

I always thought before decloaking and launching, you're supposed to be aligned to a celestial and not the target. If you align to the target, it's alot harder to escape, no?

I always made sure the celestial (or bookmark) I'm aligning to is in line with the target.

This. If you're aligned to the celestial when you launch the bomb, it's going to go to the celestial, right? You MUST be aligned to the target when you launch. The pros make sure their escape vector is the same as their attack vector.

You're also aware that you don't have to lock your target to launch a bomb, right?

I am not. I am close to training for SB so this is good to know. So I guess that explains why aligning to target is helpful because the bomb simply explodes in that area?

Precisely. All a bomb does is track straight ahead for 7.5 seconds and explode, there is no tracking or homing ability whatsoever. Generally, in those 7.5 seconds, the bomb travels 30km, so that is the common range to launch from. If you are in line with your target and the celestial you're warping to, you'll be long gone before the bomb lands.

Yep, that's about how I've always done it. Get to 35km of my target, align to my out-bm, once up to full speed (I'm usually at about 30km by here) launch bomb and warp.

For a bomb run starting near bomb range to target.

Be at 35-40km from target, preferebly with a celestial (not a moon) or other warp out fairly close to directly opposite your target (and showing on your brackets, not overview).

Approach target.

30km from target (or your selcted launch distance if you are trying to guess where they WILL be as opposed to ARE)......decloack - launch - right click warp out object and gtfo.

Having said that if you are reasonably careful about your target then having the warp out aligned to your bomb run can be less important. In fact if you anticipate a good chance of target or a nearby budy bubbling with a god chance of catching you it can be better to use an object BEHIND you as a warp out as the act of warping will often help align you out of bubble (the bubble rarely goes up with you deep deep inside it).

Of course having said all that, your chances of killing anything with a lone SB bombing are close to nill. You basically need to catch an MWD'ing T1 Cruiser or Frig to pop it with just the bomb, and bombing with the intention of hanging around to Torp target to death requires a sligtly different approach anyway.

As someone who has wasted many bombs alone on targets from POS modules, frigs to large fleets..... while futile, it can still be fun :-)

Unless you have bunch of bombers that pretty much carpet the place you wont kill much. The only things that will die is pretty much frigs and T1 cruisers with their MWD activated... if they dont have MWD activated you wont kill **** with a single bomb.

A tengu, even in half shields, will just laugh at your bomb... at least you were smart enough not to stick around to kill him... because the damage torps do to tengus are loltastic as well.

I have wasted many bombs and not killed one person. Although I did once on the Sisi server, but I stole that one from a carrier.

Seriously, bombs are next to useless by themselves. Can't kill anything because of sig radius. Only meant for big targets, in 0.0. Well unless you get lucky, set up a roam in deep red/neut space w/ afk cloaking tactic, or join a large CTA roam with your parent alliance, you are not going to kill anything.

I was all excited when I got to SB. Im caldari so I got all the torp skills for it. I live in null sec and to find anything dumb enough to mine or transport stuff alone is damn near impossible.

I alomst got a iteron mk3 once, but twas a trap. I got away, but really, they should just take bombs out or buff them. They are useless in nullsec.

A single bomber can be used somewhat effectively against JB traffic, picking off small haulers and generally causing panic in the less than brilliant among us that use them. But overall, a single bomber isn't going to do much. It's when you can get 3, 4, or hell, 20-25 bombers together competently that it becomes a VERY dangerous force. I have known a bomber wing to annihilate about 150 battleships in a single pass.

Still and all, every prospective bomber pilot needs to know how it's done solo as well as in a fleet. And as said a couple of posts up, it's fun to do practice runs on rats or something Laughing

A good idea is to wait by a bubble. People tend to hit their mwds to get out the bubble so you will get a full hit. A bomb will kill pretty much any frig or t1 cruiser that has its mwd on and also things like recons and dictors that tend to be made of paper. A lone bomb is useless against bs, logis, hacs, plated recons, bcs, ab frigs.

It won't even kill many drones unless they are mwding.

Bombs can be both fun, and extremely annoying!
Go Sabre go!
Most fun though!
